How did you end up becoming a software developer? Is that something you always wanted to do?

No, I didn't. It was circumstantial because I was studying Physics, but I graduated at the time of the dot.com boom. Most of my friends from Uni went to work for IT. But it worked for me. It helped that we had to program using Fortran for some subjects such as Numerical Methods.

What has been your main contribution to the IT industry over the years?

For the past fifteen years, I have been lucky enough to be one of the main contributors to designing and implementing a full-blown workflow management system tailored specifically to Finance. This, in my view, is an innovative approach to workflow design because it makes creating workflows really accessible.

How proficient do you have to become in a programming language before you can start developing new tools?

In today’s world, one requires proficiency in one of the programming languages, such as Python, Java, C++, Ruby, Pearl, and others. But at the same time, we are starting to see the proliferation of no-code or low-code paradigms, which essentially allows people with low or no technical knowledge to get their feet wet and start putting together simple tools and applications.

Could you give me an example?

So, a great example would be an app. More and newer tools provide people with low technical skills the power to design graphically and deploy their fully functioning apps into the marketplace. I recently came across this app that shows your top art picks to purchase. It was developed as a no-code app entirely. Of course, those who want to go the no-code route must have basic computer skills, such as filling up forms, following web-based wizards, using photo-editing software and deal with some logical workflows.

How can you make sure that your app fits the needs of the market?

Usually, apps tend to go through fashions, which means that there will be periods of time when some things will be more popular than others. For example, ten years ago, social media apps were the hit of the moment. These days we see mostly apps used by influencers. Many people confuse social media apps with these. Still, they are a different category because their purpose is not for general friend-based sharing of experiences, knowledge, ideas or even day to day events. Instead, they are geared towards advertisement, commerce, online sales, product reviews, etc. So, basically, the chances of success of a given app will be outlined by current market trends, which is to say that not all original ideas become an overnight success. Equally, today’s digital marketing strategies allow users to connect with their favourite brands or discover new ones. So, in general, success is the result of hard work on many fronts.

Can you highlight some of the strengths of both iOS and Android platforms?

iOS developers enjoy the well-established platform tool kits and marketplace provided to them by Apple. iPhones, iPads, iPods and Macs have become quite ubiquitous especially in the USA and Europe, which by themselves comprise two of the biggest financial markets. Of course, they can only develop apps for Apple products.

Android developers have the freedom of the open-source/market abundance of all other phones and devices, and in addition to that, they have at their disposal cross-platform languages and platforms like Flutter (write it once, and it can run in both iOS and Android)

What kind of apps do you think are truly innovative?

In my view, from now onwards, apps that solve particular and practical problems will be proliferating in the apps market, irrespective of the underlying platform. Given the increase of internet-connected devices, what we call IoT (Internet of Things), more people would require seamless control of their smart devices. And it needs to be kept simple. Thus, applications that offer full control and simplicity will become the new hype. Also, the current climate change reversal initiatives ( greener technologies) will generate a need for apps that will replace current technologies associated with the destruction of the environment.

Can you tell me a bit about your team?

We are fortunate to have come together as a team. We share ideas openly because everyone's involvement in the creative process is crucial to us- it's these discussions that drive an idea into its full realization. And then again, we are incredibly lucky that the technical work is in their hands because they really are the best.

At the moment, we are a small team of four people, but each of us brings unique qualities to the business and effective communication has made this project a success.

Your team has just released a new app, but could you speak a little bit about it?

My team and I have just released an app that wants to transform the way people work and study. Our app, V-scanner, enables users to extract, edit, and share their textual data or content in a flash. It also aims to boost content organization in files and folders that can be easily maintained. But the beauty of our product relies on the seamless and efficient transition to a digitalized environment in a very user-friendly way. What's more, we transform scanning because we allow for direct uploading, instant editability and sharing of content.

What was the idea behind the app? What problem does it solve?

Well, the idea was rather simple. We wanted to obtain text extraction without relying on the traditional scanning forms, which are painfully slow and obtain images that can’t be further edited. We wanted a more optimal solution to quickly digitalize content, edit the text immediately, save it on the storage cloud, and share it simultaneously.

We also considered a tool that would help the environment to some extent, reducing paper clutter and usage. As more and more people, businesses, and other sectors move to the digital environment, we will need reliable tools to enable that transition. That’s what we are working on.

Who is this app for? Who would be your end-users?

Yeah, a straightforward answer would be education. We see this app would be really beneficial to students trying to absorb as much content as possible. Imagine how their work would be impacted positively with the help of a mobile scanner that fits in their pocket, allowing them to edit and share their work in a tap or two.

Equally, teachers would profit tremendously from not spending long hours scanning traditionally when preparing lessons. Another possible application of our tool would be for editors who need to revise pages and pages of text at a time, and for people creating content in general. Nonetheless, anyone with an iPhone, iPad or Android can benefit from this app because we all have information on paper that we want to organize and quickly transfer onto a storage cloud.

Where can we find your app? How much does it cost?

At the moment, our app is available on the Apple store and Google Play, the app is currently free of cost which supports scanning in all latin-based languages. But we also offer a subscription model that allows users to scan content in more than sixty different languages, such as Chinease, Persian, Malay, Hindi and so on. In addition to that, the subscription provides a more accurate form of scanning because it is integrated with the most advanced online OCR available today. The cost of the subscription is only 0.99 USD per month, this fee covers the usage of this advanced OCR portal. You can also visit our site to see a demo of how our product works or follow us on Facebook and Instagram and Twitter.
