If you're a writer then you'll most likely want to earn some money from your writing rather than do work for free. Yes, there will be writers who are quite happy writing for nothing and don't particularly care about money. But not everyone is like that and that's okay.

My Writing Journey

I am definitely one of those writers who like to earn money from my writing. To me, it's rewarding, which is why I went on a hunt to find a platform that would pay me.

That's when I came across transcribing online and gave it a try. I managed to make $50 in a week from that, I was quite pleased but it wasn't exactly what I envisioned myself doing as a writer. So, I searched far and wide (Quora and Reddit) to find the perfect website for writings looking to earn.

Most of the information I read all pointed to writing an ebook and self-publishing it, so I began writing about breakups and how to get over heartbreak.

My ebook was a bit of a failure as I only managed to write 7,000 words. So, I decided against publishing it as a book and instead used those chapters and turned them into articles. But I needed somewhere to publish them. Wordpress was all well and good but I wouldn't make much money from there, that's when I came across HubPages.

HubPages

HubPages was one of the first platforms I tried to earn money from. When I first posted my chapters there they looked to be doing well, I even posted a few recipes on there that got quite a few reads. However, I was only making a few cents per article. I thought it was such a waste to post my content there if I wouldn't be making much.

I was also told that my type of writing wasn't a good fit for HubPages. So I went searching again for the perfect platform and that's when I came across Medium. I earn more on Medium compared to anywhere else, but that doesn't mean I should stop searching other websites that will pay too.

Now I rarely update my HubPages account because I really don't make much there. So far I've only made $1.22 and that took six months to make that much.

I'm not blaming HubPages because I know that it is definitely my writing that's the problem, it really just doesn't fit in with that website. But HubPages also has a few limitations that I don't like, so I'm not the biggest fan of it.

Vocal Media

I only recently found out about Vocal Media and so far it has promise. Still, it isn't as good as Medium but I've read other people are making hundreds and even thousands of dollars on it. People also claim they make that much on HubPages, so I suppose it all has to do with your articles and if they fit in with that certain website - and if they capture the reader's attention.

As of right now, I've made 47 cents and I've only been posting on Vocal for less than two weeks. Compared to HubPages which took me quite a few months to even make that much I can already see that I will be earning a bit more from Vocal.

And the great thing is that I've only been recycling all my old content from Medium and posting it to Vocal, so I'm quite happy about that because now I can earn a bit more from old content that no longer get's many reads.

The only problem with Vocal is that the word count has a minimum requirement of 600 words and for poetry, it's 100 words.

As you can see both websites have their pros and cons, it's all up to you and what you prefer. HubPages seems a little more restricted and professional, whereas Vocal, much like Medium, is a little more laid back which I prefer.
