How to Write Consistently.

A guide to become more consistent with your writing.

These days it's easier than ever to find excuses not to write. It's been a tough year and it's fair to say everyones routines have been thrown out of order. Some of us are still working from home, our schedules changing every few weeks. It's hard to find any semblance of normality so making habits stick is certainly a challenge. This guide's here to make the whole process a hell of a lot easier.

Here's four tips to help you write consistently.

1. Write one sentence a day

This simple trick is probably the most beneficial rule a writer trying to meet any kind of word count can have. If you have a tendency to struggle with focusing or procrastination, this tip will prove to be a lifesaver. Once that first sentence is down you'll find yourself writing more, proud you've got your daily goal done. The first sentence is always the hardest so by setting a small goal you'll feel more confident and comfortable as you carry on. Don't waste time setting unrealistic goals, they'll only make you feel bad when you don't reach them. Keep it simple. Write one sentence a day.

2. Keep a planner

From my experience, a planner is a great way to organise any thoughts, goals and deadlines (personal or business wise) you have, as it keeps them all in one coherent place. Not everyone likes them however: many find them an unnecessary stress inducer and more of a hassle to keep than it's worth. Either way, having somewhere to keep track of your goals, deadlines, word counts, etc. is definitely something worth considering. At worst you'll grow tired of it, at best it will greatly help you write more consistently.

3. Read more

In Stephen King's book 'On Writing' he acknowledges the need for Writers to read. This rule can seem nonchalant or even obvious but you'd be surprised how little we writers genuinely read these days. Reading influences how you write, whether it's non-fiction or fiction. Reading also inspires you to write and regular reading benefits the art of your writing greatly. So maybe turn off the TV and power off your phone a few nights a week and focus on a book instead. You'll feel great finishing it and there's truly no better way to get you into writing mode.

4. Give yourself a try

The final, and most important, rule to becoming more consistent in your writing is giving yourself a shot. You're your own worst critic, remember that. You will always be harder on your work than anyone else, so whether you're writing your first draft or editing your third, try to look at the words from a different perspective or even ask a family member to read it and see what they think. Don't take the critique's personal- you genuinely can't please anyone. So don't try to. Forget publishing, what your mum thinks or how many people will read it. We write for ourselves, publishing is just a bonus. Most importantly, give yourself a try next time you sit down to write.

And there you have it folks! Four simple tricks to help get you writing more consistently. The going can get tough but don't give up and always remember;

Your story deserves to be written.
