5 Quick Tips to Get You Started

You've heard of everyone starting their own thing, either they are into health & fitness, art & design or fashion & the influencer business.

I'm not going to lie, those accounts surpassing 50K followers and all the captions ending in #ad makes you wonder why you did not think of doing that and getting some of the perks.

So, if you are here because you woke up with the feeling of contributing your talent to the world, I am here to tell you that you can do anything, there is no wrong skill or wrong idea, all you need is consistency.

Before we get into what it takes to create your own business, let start by saying that I've learned that nothing ever happens without daily doses of good ol' consistency. So, if you don't see yourself giving a good 2-3 daily hours to your side business I would say that you should stop reading right about now....

Here is what you will need in order to keep that side biz going:

1. Don't do it for the money.

If you are in this business just to make money, then it's not for you. I am not saying that money isn't a nice thing that comes along with it, but if your main focus is money, then you will lose patience and probably not reach it. The key point in having your own business is to create a platform where you can express yourself through your brand with the goal of creating a product that reflects you and contributes to society. If you are doing it to become a millionaire and quit your day job, you will lose perspective and become stressed. Make two goals: a long term one and short one. The long one should be where you see your brand in 5 years. The small one should be something more tangible, and once you reach it, create a new one. Re-invent your short term goal until it matches with your long one. If you advertise yourself as a genuine person, sharing genuine products or thoughts, a successful business idea is more likely to sprout from it than if you are only focusing in making money.

2. Think of anything.

There is no bad idea. There is no idea that can't be made into a brand. I mean, look at the slime account. As long as you are a person, with an idea, anything can be achieved through brand awareness and consistency. Now, in today's day and age you might feel like all ideas are exhausted and everything has already been done, although that might seem true, you have to remember that you are unique, and as long as you find a way to captivate an audience with something original that makes you YOU, then you found your niche.

Example: There are so many fitness accounts promoting healthy eating and daily workouts. Think about how exercise is basically universal, and yet there are multiple fitness influencers thriving across the world because they managed to find their own twist to their fitness routine. Maybe one of them is famous for exercising at home, or with their dogs, or in the park, or in an Elmo suit. Might have made the last one up, which would be hilarious, if that was a thing. (If it isn't, hit me up for royalties ;) )

3. Relax.

The idea of captivating an audience can be nerve-racking. At first it will be your family, friends and loyal followers on your Instagram, Facebook, etc. Don't worry who is seeing your posts, just remember that every day counts and every like and share is engagement that counts. Trust the process, trust yourself and your idea, and most importantly, trust consistency. Put something out every day, small or big, just post something that adds to your brand.

4. Keep innovating.

Try and stay as innovating as possible, it is likely that you might influence other accounts and they might start doing what you are doing, just brush it off and keep going. There is enough sunshine for everyone. Remember why you started, and remember that you have always something unique to contribute. As the market and interests of society keep changing through the years, so should your approach to your business. My suggestion would be to keep your end goal the same and just keep an eye out for different ways of delivering that message or product to your audience.

5. See it as a hobby.

From experience, the business of starting something on your own is key to feeling fulfilled. There are so many people that got their degree and started their professional careers and realized that it was not what they wanted to do with life. Quitting is not an option because of all the responsibilities we accumulate throughout the years, so having your own business at the end of the day it's just a hobby. A place you can throw yourself and daydream in, a place that is 100% you, a place that if you are tired of it, it is OK to walk away from.

I want to close up by saying, that the purpose of starting something that is a reflection of yourself is to put a little piece of you out there. We all have a skill or talent, and sometimes in the day-to-day that trait might get lost and trampled by responsibilities. I encourage everyone to find something they can do, that one day could turn into a business that might sustain itself. As long as you do a little everyday and maintain a consistent message throughout it, captivating an audience is inevitable.
