When I think of the balance of working life, the first word that comes to mind is smoothness. While we would like to think of it as a standing, ready-made formula that we can buy on the shelf, the fact is that the work life balance is not a place, a journey!

While we live in a time when having a balanced view of life is one of the most important things we can do, being confined to one place makes it a challenge to achieve it.

Having worked so far away from my professional life, I have found the balance of work life is more about self-control than time management: understanding how we work is key to improving our daily lives.

With this in mind, I would like to share with you four ways I have used to empower the balance of my working life.

1) Create clear mental and physical boundaries

If you work from home and have limited space, your greatest struggle may be to distinguish between your work schedule and your time. One of the most important actions we can take to change this concept of confusion is to set boundaries.

An example would be to treat your workplace as a fun project and give us a character by choosing items or settings that define them. Think about specific music, light settings, or the way your chairs are displayed during work: this will allow your brain to form a clear connection with those objects and separate them as work time.

2) Know your patterns

Spend some time realizing it. You will begin to recognize your energy levels in relation to your emotions and the type of work you do. You will see times when you will be empowered and motivated and when you will be more tired and procrastinating.

Understanding how your energy is fluctuating throughout your day and what kind of work you find most demanding will allow you to behave better and increase your chances of finding the balance of life you are fighting for.

For example, if you are accustomed to having less energy in the morning, consider doing something that motivates and empowers you first before you face the most challenging tasks on your schedule. You will feel so much better on your day!

3) Be specific in what you do and not work

When it comes to our work, we are often very clear about what we want to accomplish. So why not use the same approach in our time after work?

A lack of purpose in our work can lead to bad decisions and hinder our sense of fulfillment. Our brains are naturally encouraged to conserve energy so if you end your working day and have no intention of your actions, you will most likely make very simple decisions, not the ones that are most meaningful to you.

Taking the time to understand what is important to you, even if you are not comfortable at first, can lead you to explore new topics or activities that you have never considered before.

Focus on setting weekly goals for the tasks you would like to accomplish and establish the goal you want to achieve: it will help you increase your curiosity and feel you have made great progress in your goals.

4) Take a holistic view

One way to bring more purpose to what we do is to understand how the work we do can represent an opportunity for greater empowerment. When we view our work as a source of healthy food for our well-being, we are building a deeper relationship with what we are doing.

For example, when doing a hobby, think about what part you feed - your body, mind, heart: it will open up new ways of looking at your day and inspire you to create a variety of combinations to keep things interesting.

5) Add more life to your work

Whether we like it or not, work is an integral part of what we do as human beings. Sometimes though, we allow events to overwhelm us and forget to look at our daily work as an opportunity for attention, exposure, and learning.

A practical way to help us get into this mindset is to link our key activities with opportunities for personal fulfillment.

For example, if you are calling a new client, consider how this could represent an opportunity to expand your skills or connect with someone. Having this emotional relationship with our work is important in developing our vision, one of the four essential conditions for well-being.

One way to bring more life into our daily work is by changing the way we handle our workload. How often do we come to the end of our working day feeling that we no longer have the strength to do the things that matter to us?

An easy way to ensure that we maintain healthy energy levels throughout our day is to take short 5-minute breaks between activities. The fact is that your energy is sufficient, and if you learn to respect them, you will not only be more present and powerful in what you do but also make more space for you to achieve your goals more purposefully.
