Achieving financial freedom is now available through the internet. It comes through the concept of the side hustle, which is a means of making extra money along with your main job. A 2021 survey revealed over two-thirds of these operations were started in the last three years. Most of them occurred in 2020, during the height of the COVID pandemic.

How to Start a Successful Side Hustle

Finding the right side hustle is both easy and hard. With so many people taking on this endeavor it's hard to find an opening. However, it isn't inconceivable. Here are a few steps to start a successful side hustle.

What do People Want?

First, ask yourself what people want. You might have tons of ideas for a side hustle. However, the things that make you happy might not be what the public wants.

The way to discover where the needs are is to ask your friends. Maybe they require a virtual assistant to help with their schedule or someone to do small repairs. Even if these don't fit you right now, you can certainly learn them.

If you'd rather make something instead of providing a service, then search the internet. The fact that someone else is doing print-on-demand t-shirts as a side hustle doesn't mean you can't take it on. You simply need to find a new twist to it.

Make it Yours

Go back to print-on-demand services. If you follow the exact path of others, then you won't be able to move away from the pack. You need to uniquely own your side hustle.

As an example, take the way you ship your products. Custom packaging shows the customer that you are above the others in your industry. Plus, if its design is well-received, then it could be another item you sell to increase profitability.

Consider Passive Income

There are two forms of side hustle income -- passive and active. The latter involves regular work that's done at nights and weekends. If it's labor-intensive, then you may eventually give it up if it affects your full-time position. Passive income, on the other hand, requires a large amount of work at first followed by maintenance.

There are several examples of passive income streams. Among the most popular are print-on-demand (t-shirts, mugs, etc.) and affiliate marketing. Both require a good deal of work at the start. However, once they're in place, you need to maintain them so they remain visible to the public.

Keep Going

Not every side hustle is an immediate success. Like any profession, it could take time and effort to get people to notice. For instance, most people who make TikTok and YouTube videos as a side hustle don't receive 100,000 hits on their first post.

All you need is a tiny mustard seed of determination and a promise to make your business grow. There may be days when you don't want to post a new video or t-shirt design. However, the more you push through those thoughts the easier it will be to grow your side hustle.

Not everything will be a success. You'll have high and low moments. Faith in your side hustle is easy when things go well. However, it's maintaining those beliefs during the downtimes that make you and the entrepreneurship a success.

Know When it's Time to Make the Side Hustle Your Job

Some individuals run side hustles to make extra cash. Others do it to make it their full-time position. Those in the latter category need to know when it's time to shift the side project.

The income stream is one sign it's time to resign from your current position. If your side hustle is making as much or more as your full-time job then you need to consider your next steps. This also happens if the wealth is combined with a growth of your side hustle into a full-fledged business. If you reach a bursting point where you need to start hiring others, then it's time to go from worker to full-time entrepreneur.

Are you ready to start a side hustle project? If so, then follow the above recommendations to make it a success. In the end, your passion for the project will convert into extra income and a word-of-mouth campaign that takes it to the next level.
