What is Clubhouse?

Clubhouse is a new audio-based, invite-only social networking app. Clubhouse has virtual rooms where people gather to discuss a variety of topics. When you enter a room, you’ll most likely just listen to the conversation, in fact, that is the best thing to do until you get a feel for how things work. If you have a question or input, the room moderators, who have a green bean or dot by their names, can invite you to talk. While Clubhouse is still in beta, there are over 10 million active users from around the world. In May 2021, Android users were invited to the platform.

Clubhouse is essentially a high-level, multi-faceted conference call, without the video. It's like live podcasts but with a more exclusive group feel. The beauty of the app is, you never know who is listening in the audience, that one person could be your ideal client. There’s also no archive of the conversation, so once the conversation is over and the room is closed, that content is gone forever, that is, unless you record the call, which can be done if you expressly tell individuals you are doing so.

One of the perks of Clubhouse is that it's voice-only. So, you don't need a spotless background for camera view, or even be in your office. You can connect to the call anywhere you have cell service. You don't have to worry about what you are wearing or whether your hair is a mess. It also reduces screen fatigue because you don't have to stay focused on the camera. Clubhouse is the perfect solution for those who are shy but want to join in to talk with and learn from others. Most Clubhouse users routinely multitask while listening to the audio.

Clubhouse is an app that you'll need to download to your iPhone or Android. Once again, new members are added by invitation only. When you open the app, if you don't have an invitation, you can reserve your username for when you find someone to send you an invite.

Clubhouse is a wonderful way to network with others. It can help you gain new followers, display your expertise, build a loyal audience, develop thought leadership and even make money. Yes, that's correct, you can use this app to make money. When you become the hub of information for others, they are more likely to take your advice and buy your products. Why? Because they know, like and trust you.

You can connect your Clubhouse account to other social media accounts such as Instagram and Twitter. This helps you follow up and connect off the platform, where the real deals are made.

Once you're a member, you can create your own room where you can start providing massive value on your area of expertise. The more consistent you are, the better your connections will be and the more you can serve your audience. When you open the app, you will be in what is called the Hallway. This Hallway let’s you see the upcoming room topics. There are open rooms where anyone with a Clubhouse account can join and there are also closed rooms where you must be invited to join. These closed rooms are great for having team meetings or high-level masterminds.

Joining other people's rooms gives you the opportunity to expand your knowledge, to see what others are discussing and what questions they may have. This can help you build a list of topics you can use in your business, for creating your own discussion room and more. By joining discussion rooms, and offering to share your knowledge, you can expand your following and make new business connections.

When you're ready, you can create your own rooms to talk about not only the items on your newly created topic list, but any others you feel are important. For example, if you offer marketing services as a PR Professional, you can talk about the numerous ways to market a business, tools they can use, things to avoid, current trends, pitching to editors, the importance of building relationships, the list is endless.

Just like with other social media sites, Clubhouse can be used to expand your reach, build relationships, and grow a loyal following that wants to take your advice. It gives you the opportunity to showcase your knowledge and to raise your level of expertise and increase your authority and influence

However, unlike other social media sites, Clubhouse allows you to make more personal, deeper connections because you are speaking with people directly rather than just posting content for others to read. Clubhouse has masterfully brought voice to center stage. Audio is very personal. You are allowing someone to speak directly into your ear. Audio-only single-handedly allows our minds to create the video with our imagination.

In order for relationships to flourish in business, an emotional connection must be formed. Sound and voice go straight to one’s heart and inextricably deepens the bond and personal connection between the listeners.

Italian journalist Italo Calvino had it right when he said, “It is not the voice that commands the story; it is the ear.”

5 THINGS PR PROS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CLUBHOUSE

1. The world is in the midst of a social audio domination. With the rise of podcasts (about 2 million), and now Clubhouse, voice-based communications are crucial. As a PR Pro your voice is now more valuable and much more needed than ever.

2. Clubhouse gives PR Pros a new way to communicate on behalf of their clients. Senior Editor for PRNEWS Nicole Schuman wrote an article entitled: Osaka Fallout: Are Press Conferences Still the Answer? Instead of doing the traditional press conference, why not have an audio-only press conference on Clubhouse? As PR Pros we need to continue to innovate and advocate on behalf of our clients.

3. The fastest way to develop know, like and trust for your clients is to create an emotional connection with customers. Voice-based conversations do that instantly. You know immediately by the tone of someone’s voice if you want to continue the conversation or end it.

4. All clients want to know the ROI of using a new social platform. Clubhouse has some robust 3rd-party analytics that not only tell you who was listening, but provides their age, gender, and Instagram handles. These analytics also let you know the most popular rooms and the most popular clubs. PR Pros can provide trackable details to their clients so they can follow-up and continue to nurture these potential customers. (I will be teaching an upcoming class on this topic).

5. Clubhouse is a great way to build brand awareness, run impromptu focus groups, get immediate customer feedback, connect with customers, host online events, host team meetings, share company announcements, teach on your topic of expertise, build authority for yourself or your client, connect with media outlets and much more.
