If you have been receiving more than your share of rejection letters, especially without any explanation, it may be worth your while to look at how well your resume is representing your skills and talents. Building an online resume can be one of the best strategies you have as you compete in the job market today. There are 13 things you need to review when it comes to your resume.

Make sure you use keywords

Using specific words geared to the job that you are seeking is imperative. Using specific words to attract search engines will greatly enhance your chances of getting your foot in the door in the online job market. Keys words specify two things (1) what the employer is looking for and (2) content or skill set you are providing. Think of them as your calling card. You are stating that you have what is being sought after.

Make good use of critical keywords more than once

You can use critical key words more than once when compiling your work experience and skill set. Be sure to use them effectively. Well placed key words draw attention and match company needs. Knowing when and where to place them helps hiring managers sort through the many resumes they see daily.

Use a skill set or summary of skills section

Perspective employers and hiring managers can tell a lot by how well you organize your resume. Creating a summary of skills and/or category section helps in determining whether they wish to continue moving you through the process. This is a highlighted preview of who you are and how you can fit the culture and work environment.

Resume should be job specific

You must tailor each resume to the job description. If your resume is too generic or general the message translates that you are not serious about the specific company you are interested in working for. It may also signal that you are not serious about your job search efforts.

Be sure to include the dates of employment

This may seem like a no-brainer; however, it is worth mentioning. Providing dates of employment shows job consistency. Although you may be tempted to leave the dates off if you have significant gaps, it does not fair favorably. There are ways to present your gaps in a positive way and allow you an opportunity to further address them in detail during an interview if requested.

Using a somewhat longer resume than the traditional 1–2 pages

This trend is proving to be useful. For many years having a one-page resume ensured visibility and moved you along in the process. The thinking was that you saved the manager or employer time. Having two-pages today presents qualitative information and substance. Do not be afraid to go over the one-page traditional resume especially if this is the job you are most interested in pursuing.

Keep the format simple and do not use fancy graphics

Creativity has its’ place. Your resume is not one of those places to dazzle a perspective employer unless the employer asks you to be creative. Less is more. Remember the resume is a snapshot of your talents, abilities and skill set and should pique the interest of the hiring manager or perspective employer.

Make sure your media presence matches your resume

Make sure that your online profiles match your written resume and that your social media presents the best possible lifestyle character. Hiring Managers and Employers often research media presence when it comes to hiring the right person to add to their team. Checking social media has become a way to see what work and life balance, reputation and interests a perspective employee will bring the culture of a company.

Make sure you have a paper copy of your resume

Even in a paperless environment, you may need a hard copy of your resume. You never know when or where a paper copy of your resume can prove beneficial and speed up the hiring process in your favor.

Use networking to your advantage

Networking is a lifeline for job seekers and will be more effective when done slowly so do not rush in your efforts. Cultivating relationships within your career objective will prove beneficial and can be an introduction that allows you access to the right people within a company.

Be ready

Keep in mind the process may move quickly. There are times when a hiring manager or employer has identified you as the “one” and fast-tracks you through the process. Be sure to be ready! Have as much paperwork ready in anticipation for job acceptance. You will need to have access to your social security card, ID (photo), reference list, proof of education and any other items deemed necessary.

You will benefit if you stay on top of hiring trends

Keeping abreast of what companies are looking for and who is hiring can assist you with developing strategies in your job search efforts.

Summary

Wherever you are in your job search, having the right information, tools and preparation will help you succeed in your efforts.

Here’s to your success!
