E-Commerce retailers frequently utilise pick and pack, which is a method of order fulfilment process that receive small orders that are dispatched worldwide. Instead of packaging and sending whole packages and bundles of goods, eCommerce retailers employ warehousing staff to select single products from warehouse shelves, and afterwards package them, that are intended for specific customers for transport- thus the name pick and pack. Using this method offers pick and pack staff simpler access to merchandise and if organised in a proper manner, saves time for handling. This process minimises shipping costs and other expenses.

However, this process runs seamlessly only if there is excellent coordination, organisation and accuracy. A pick and pack fulfilment centre's biggest hurdle is to streamline worker’s movements via warehouses in order to fulfil as many orders as soon as possible.

The best way to ensure that the worker’s movement is streamlined the most is to use the pick and pack strategy that works best for your order quantity as well as storage capacity.

Pick and Pack Strategies

In order to overcome a few of the typical pick and pack obstacles, fulfilment houses adopt either one of the following picking methods:

  • Zone picking
  • Piece packing
  • Wave picking
  • Batch picking

Piece Picking: Since piece picking is a simple process, most companies start with it. As workers receive orders, they pick them one by one. Orders are taken into the warehouse by them and the items are picked from shelves only after the orders are completed. It should be noted that in many warehouses, piece picking is inefficient- it’s most suitable for the most compact warehouses.

Batch Picking: This order picking strategy is utilised by warehouses having more traffic as it is quite efficient. Like that of the piece picking strategy, this strategy entails choosing products for single orders. But, workers performing batch picking complete over one order in a single go.

Zone Picking: In this order picking strategy, the warehouses are separated into areas known as zones. Workers pick goods merely from their allotted zones. For orders needing goods from multiple zones, workers move boxes from zone to zone. Using conveyor belts or by hand, the boxes can be moved. In contrast to batch or piece picking, this order picking strategy is way too efficient.

Wave Picking: This order picking strategy blends batch picking and zone picking. Workers who adopt wave picking are designated to zones and orders are picked in batches as well as picked merely within that zones.

Customer expectation is a challenge when it comes to pick and pack services. Customers have gotten used to purchasing online, and expect products to be available, delivered within one or two days, to reach the destination promptly, and must match the online image exactly. They’re also after a variety of products, smartphone ordering capabilities, Prompt delivery as well as free returns. Customers expect good service and fulfilment centres should make the pick and pack process efficient to fulfil and surpass customer expectations. These customer expectations are familiar to retailers who are used to engaging in the direct-to-consumer market. But most repositories and their logistics and distribution managers are unfamiliar with this and have difficulties adapting their knowledge, practical knowledge and tools to accommodate the needs of customers they cater to, through the pick and pack process.

Pick and pack is an integral part of eCommerce fulfilment. Order fulfilment and fulfilling customer expectations depend on pick and pack workers, and companies must work constantly to make operations efficient to ensure their pick and pack duty is performed as efficiently, cost-effectively, and precisely as possible.
