I work in a leadership position so I'm always thinking of ways that I can improve my skill set and my team. With that being said, what truly constitutes a leader? That's a great question, and one that is worth looking deeper into.

I came up with these 10 signs that you're working with a true leader because I believe that I'm a true leader by nature. I have always had a leadership mindset and I love leading to a certain extent.

Here is my list:

1. They Strive for Excellence- They work as hard or harder than anyone else on the team to meet or beat the expectations that have been laid out for them by upper management.

2. They Give Praise and Gratitude- They are sure to give their teams praise and thanksgiving for a job well done. Everyone appreciates being appreciated when it is deserving.

3. They Lead by Example- They don't mind getting in the trenches with the team and getting their hands dirty. I have always been a worker and never a watcher, I never sit back and watch my team do the work. I’m right in there with them getting it done.

4. They Share Valuable Knowledge- They are building the next leaders so they must be open to sharing their knowledge, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

5. They Celebrate Wins- They always celebrate wins, no matter how big or how small. A win is a win, and it deserves to be celebrated.

6. They Develop Expertise- They know the job and the ins and out of it. How can you be a great leader if you don't know what you are doing and how can you train up more leaders if you are a poor leader yourself?

7. They Set Clear Priorities- They must set the priorities so that the team knows the game plan. How can a coach lead his team to victory without having a game plan, a plan of action? When you fail to plan you plan to fail.

8. They Make Decisions- They make decisions on a daily basis. Making decisions is a part of the job, you can't run to your boss for every single thing, you have to be able to make logical decisions without someone holding your hand.

9. They Respect People’s Time- They have to know how important it is to respect people's time; time is one of our most valuable assets and nobody wants their precious time wasted.

10. They Demonstrate Understanding- They have to exhibit understanding; most leaders work with a diverse group of people. Everyone's cultures and beliefs are different. We must be sensitive to everyone's thoughts, feelings, and emotions. They have to be fair across the board.

In Conclusion

There are still some true leaders out there, and there are some that aspire to be true leaders one day. Whatever category you fit into taking note of the list that I have shared and work at being the best that you can be. It really sucks working for or under someone that has no people skills or no leadership skills for that matter. I have been at both ends of the spectrum and to say that it sucks is truly an understatement.

If you are working to get into a leadership role keep these things in mind and you will be well on your way to being a great leader. It doesn't come naturally to everyone, some of us have to learn to be great leaders and some of us are born with it.

Much Love,

Trina
