Interview with Art Entrepreneur Aryea Flohr
This week we interviewed Aryea Flohr – an accomplished artist and entrepreneur – about the artist as an entrepreneur. I’m glad to bring to you the first part of our interview.
Aryea Flohr is a 37 year old artist based in New York City. Known as one of the most extraordinary contemporary artists, Aryea has an incredible talent for drawing and painting detailed, accurate and lifelike paintings.
In addition to being an independent award-winning artist, Aryea Flohr is an even bigger entrepreneur hailing from the streets of New York City. Namely, he counsels professional visual artists and creative entrepreneurs who want to build sustainable businesses and careers.
We caught up with internationally renowned professional artist Aryea Flohr to find out more about his artistic journey and about the artist as an entrepreneur.
When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
Aryea Flohr: By the age of eight, I already knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. At the beginning of the 2000s, my parents ran a successful shop, so I grew up among a lot of business-savvy people and I wanted to be just that.
What do you enjoy most about entrepreneurship?
Aryea Flohr: Being an entrepreneur brings new challenges to the table every day. That's what I love about this profession. It's an incredible feeling: being able to bring your dream to life. My favorite part of this job is networking with other artists and entrepreneurs. I love getting to meet new people in my industry and share ideas.
How do you market yourself?
Aryea Flohr: I market myself in many different ways… From social media marketing, online publications, leading online galleries, & more.
What is your favourite medium and why?
Aryea Flohr: Oil paints are definitely my favorite medium. The colors have such vibrancy, and you can manipulate them on the canvas for quite a while.
What drives you to create a piece of art?
Aryea Flohr: There are a lot of things that drive me. Mostly social issues, creating in response to the times. But also I’m passionate about storytelling and so a lot of my work is about telling different stories.
What advice would you give to an aspiring artist?
Aryea Flohr: If you want to create art, just do it and see if you enjoy it. If you plan on doing it for the rest of your life, be original and avoid copying other artists' work. Acknowledge those you've been influenced by. Promote your paintings on the Internet and try to expand your reach. Even if you can't quit your day job to become a full-time artist, you'll have a great hobby that you can do for fun while earning some extra money.
What advice would you give to starting entrepreneurs?
Aryea Flohr: I would advise aspiring entrepreneurs not to give up on their dreams, even when no one else sees their vision. Maybe one day it will all be different. "One of the main ingredients of your own success is the promotion you will receive. When you show consistency in your work and showcase your abilities, others will show their support," says artist and entrepreneur Aryea Flohr.
Consider each step forward as a step in the direction of your successful career as an art entrepreneur. Observe each time you pause or breathe out and enjoy the scenery as a time for reflection. Your environment is your greatest life coach. Maintaining a positive mindset is only half the battle - you also need to regularly evaluate your progress toward your goals. Maybe your goals no longer serve you, or perhaps your actions aren't as productive as they should be. You might have set too many goals, or not enough. Self-reflection is important for many reasons.
Take the time to figure out how you like to work. Are you more comfortable being challenged or relaxed? Are you more productive during the day or at night; alone or as part of a team? The more questions you ask yourself, the more you will discover there are to ask. Without self-reflection, many opportunities are out of reach.
