Fly for you

Feelings of euphoria swelled within me, with the sounds of the whistling winds in my ears. Flocks of birds, unchained by gravity, glide beside me, racing through the clouds.

Throbs of pain suddenly overwhelmed my adrenaline as my dwindling consciousness faded. My senseless body plummeted, as the winds do not show mercy on my battering wings.

I heard the fluttering wings of a bird. My obscured vision could see it was a pure white dove, soaring through the skies unchained and unburdened. I felt envious of the beautiful creature.

“Are you okay?” a perturbed rough voice called out as I slowly came into consciousness. My hazy vision saw a black shadow looming over me. Fear engulfed my senses, recalling the traumatic memories of that hateful place.

“I won’t hurt you” the same voice mutters comfortingly as his hand pats my head. His touch felt warm and soothing, it was a sensation I only felt when I’m flying.

I landed on a hill overlooking a stupendous flower field with a 1900’s windmill in the middle. I was amazed at the scenery, as bees and butterflies hover about, till one landed on the finger of the man beside me.

It was astonishing how angelic the man was. The glare of his light blue eyes, hid hints of grief, while baring unparalleled gentle kindness. His benign smile could calm even the strongest of winds and wildest of storms.

My wings were still out for the world to see. In a panic, I hurryingly tucked them away out of sight. The intense gaze of the man let out a feeling of concerning uneasiness.

The silence was broken at his gesture to follow; it was then that it occurred to me that he was bound to a wheelchair. Even so, I went along with the enticing stranger.

“On the passenger seat, there’s a first aid box” he explains, unlocking the van. “Can you please get it down for me” he asks.

With endless weariness, I had cautiously carried out his request while at the same time, a part of me worried if I had hurt him. We were completely isolated in this deserted beautiful grassland, not a person could be found. My heart began to race at the possible danger I was in, that was till he softly grasped my hand.

It was weirdly calming, “Can you show me your wings?” he whispers. I was taken aback, I slipped back my hand. I was horrified at his question, as I feared the possibility of reliving my memories. With arms tightly drawn to my chest, I choked out through my trembling voice, “..N..o”.

The man made no attempt to get close as I backed away, he only bore a small sympathetic smile. “I can understand why you find me so distrusting” he tenderly spoke, “But I can assure you, on my life, that I won’t hurt you in any shape or form” he quietly promised.

As if on cue, the same dove I saw earlier flew from behind with the wind and landed on the man. The little bird as it rested upon his shoulder. He feed the bird a couple of berries from a bag he kept in his pocket, I felt the tenderness of his nature.

I breathed in, as I revealed my wings to him. His eyes filled with bewilderment, that I mistook for disgust, studied the wings. He unknowingly lowly uttered out, “…so…beautiful”.

I moved closer to him and with every step his eyes took in everything he was seeing. Wings that could reach the heavens would bewilder any human. With a single swift flutter, I rested my injured wing on his lap as I sat on the floor with my legs drawn to my chest and my arms wrapped around my knees. I felt his fingers applying something cold but it eased the pain. He moved as if he was caring for an abandoned kitten, I took comfort at his gentleness.

“Thank you” I told him as I backed away. The man nodded in response, just as I was about to fly away, he called out to me, “Will I see you again?”.

I gazed over my shoulder back at the kind beautiful man. I plucked a feather, strolling towards the man while reaching for his hand as I gifted him the feather, “You won’t” I told him gently.

The man simply watched me with a smile without another word.

The suns’ rays peered through the window as I listened to the IV drops as I tugged on the restraints. I was itching to flythrough the skies.

A loud thud caught my attention, swarms of children came flooding in as they ran about the hospital room. A panicked nurse followed, pacing around after them. What was shocking wasn’t the children but the man on the wheelchair with them.

I glanced out the window again, only to see the familiar white dove resting on the branch of a tree nearest to the window.

“Hello” a voice from beside me greeted. I looked at the man in surprise, unable to find the words. He noticed the restraints, a sympathetic expression soon bore his angelic features once again.

“Why would they restrain you?” he implores in a concerned tone.

I shrugged my shoulders, not wanting to honestly answer. He narrowed his eyes at me, figuring out that I was lying. I reluctantly looked him in the eye, “I can’t be outside, I might scare people” I murmured out in a low voice, holding back the urge to cry.

He reaches down into his pocket and pulls out a feather, “ I always carry it with me”. One of the kids opened the window, a gush of wind flew into the hospital room.

“It’s so pure and kind, how can you scare anyone?” he says rhetorically as he raised it to his lips to gently kiss it while making eye contact. His soft short black hair blew with the wind, revealing his alluring blue eyes.

I was baffled, “You’re blushing” he teases as he covers his mouth like a middle aged lady. He mystified me, he wasn’t disgusted or sacred of me, he simply saw me.

“If anything, you’re an angel” he tells me with a gentle voice as he clasped my hand.

My mouth was nervously gaping at the loss of words, “What’s your name?”, the man responded with a chuckle, “Leo”.

“Nice to meet you, Leo” I greeted, as he untied the restraints even though he isn’t allowed to.

“Are you sure about this?” I asked him, concerned about the consequences of letting me go. He nodded with a grin to which I responded with a small smile.

I hopped onto my toes, glad to finally be able to move. I glanced behind me at the open window, “Do you feel like going outside?” I suggestively asked. He gave me a puzzled look as he glanced through the window, “Sure…?” he hesitantly answers.

With the curtains drawn, I pressed my forehead against his as I gently clasped his cheeks. Swells of magic accumulated within me as the winds roared, circulating around us. Ray of soft light emanated from my palms as they’re absorbed into Leo.

I saw that he was afraid as he tightened his grip on his armrest. He began floating off his chair, his panic caused to clumsily fumble mid-air. “Calm down Leo” I softly told him, as I cupped his cheek, “Breathe”. I grabbed his hand, “I won’t let anything happen to you”.

His breathing slowed with the calming beats of his heart. He squeezed my hand, “Just don’t let go” he whispers looking away.

“Won’t they notice we left?” He asks, looking back the empty bed and chair. I nodded at him, “Who cares” I chuckled, taking flight as I led him.

We flew above the clouds, higher than I have ever before, wanting to show him the pleasure of flying. We swayed and twirled and hid amongst the clouds. I saw that Leo was enjoying himself as he grew more comfortable with flying.

“You never told me your name” he calls out over the whistling wind. I pulling to a stop, “I don’t have one” I admitted playfully.

He could see that I was telling the truth this time. He planted his hand on top of my head.

“How about Celestia?” he suggests, “for heavenly”. His hand trails along my long platinum hair, raising strands of hair to his lip landing a soft small kiss. A crimson red spread over my face as he gave me a tender grin.

He landed an another kiss on the back of my hand, “I’m honored that you like it” he says charmingly. I felt light-headed, growing weak in more ways than one.

“Leo” I sternly murmured out, “We have to go back”.

With a quick nod, he cradled me into his arms and without a wasted moment, he flew past flocks of birds as the clouds were ripped in half by his speed.

I was flabbergasted at how fast he learnt, “..How?” I asked as I wrapped my arms around his neck. He looked down at me, “I’m just as surprised as you” he jokes. Soon enough we reached the hospital window, and to our relief no one noticed we were gone.

Leo sat down at his chair, the magic came to an end when I let go of his hand. Exhaustion instantly seeped in as I flumped down on my bed, I never thought using magic would be so draining.

“Celestia?” I drew my attention to the man, “Yeah?” I answered, “Thank you” he says reaching out for my hand. A chilling feeling came over me.

“And I’m sorry” he chillingly adds.

A barge of armed men came rushing in, neglecting care for anyone in the room. They surrounded me as they drew their guns with hostility, I looked at Leo, frightened.

“Why?” I questioned quietly, holding back tears. I saw him raising on to his feet, I flinched forward to catch him from falling, only to find he is able to walk with ease. I looked at him with hurt, shook, “..You lied to me?” I devastatingly whimpered.

He presses his forehead against mine with a mischievous smile. I trembled under his hold, it was like he was a completely different man. His eyes were as if they reflected the oceans deepest dark blue abyss where monsters lurked for their next victim.

The Leo I thought I knew, violently pinned me down underneath his large body, not sparing a single thought if he had hurt me. Tears rolled down my cheeks as they fell onto the bed sheets, leaving small wet stains. He only tightened his hold while two other men chained my legs and arms, specialized for withholding my magic and wings.

The group left ahead of Leo as per to his instructions, referring to him as “Colonel”. Silence swept between us in the destroyed hospital room as I remained laying on the bed as he backed away.

“I’m sorry” he repeated with much sorrow, diverting his eyes to the ground. I remained silent, unmoved till I felt his arms going underneath my knees and waist. My heart froze over as his warmth and gentleness somehow remained unchanged.

His unit patiently waited for their ‘colonel’ as he carried me into their army vehicle. I knew that day might just as well be the last time I ever see the skies, never to be soaring through the clouds again.

“You will see it again” a voice whispered, interpreting my thoughts. “I’ll make sure of it” adds Leo in a low voice, for only me to hear. I glanced at the man’s ocean like eyes, “Let go” as I ripped myself off his lap. The rest flinched, fearing that I might attempt to flee. Their so-called Colonel motioned them to stay back as I sat down opposite his seat.

Time slowly passed by, as I was escorted back along the familiar bumpy road to that dreadful cold lab. I closed my eyes shut as I shivered at the memories of the endless needles, torture, binding, beeping, blood and experimenting. I barely escaped last time, I won’t be able to do it again.

Knowing that I was the last of my kind was my only relief, at least no one else is subjected this hell.

Suddenly a large explosion hurled the vehicle backwards, flipping the air. We thrashed about in the cramped space, blood splattering everywhere. I felt an arm around my waist, pulling me towards them. I knew it was Leo. Another explosion went off as he pulled me away from the carnage.

I noticed he was missing his boots, shirt and parts of his army pants when we were quite a distance away. His heaving chest outlined his toned torso while his muscular arm was still around my waist. He was making sure we weren’t being followed as he looked over his shoulder. “We should be okay now” he says to me before letting me go awkwardly. He took a moment to catch his breathe as I watched him, unsure of what I should be feeling.

Before I knew it, he drew me into a tight yet consoling hug as I felt his breathing tickling my hair. I didn’t know whether to be angry or relived, I could only stay still. I wasn’t seeing any signs of him letting go so I softly pushed his chest back. “Explain” I sternly commanded, “Colonel” as I stared straight into his eyes.

He gently breathed out as he reached the back of his head before swiftly reaching around my waist and tossing me over his shoulder, without a word. I attempted to wriggle out his hold, only to fail by his overwhelming strength. “I’ve a car nearby, if we can get away, I’ll spill” he said as he ran through the dense jungle.

After some time, we got to his car that was covered by a green sheet to blend with the jungle. I got in the passenger seat as he held the door. We reached the main road soon after.

“At least take these off” I said impatiently, holding out my arms in front of me. He gave me a sideways look from the driver seat as he reached over an arm to take the restraints off.

I chucked both restraints out the window before looking back at the man beside me. “You gonna talk yet, Colonel?” leaning against the door as he sped up. He huffed out in defeat, “Don’t call me that” he says. I let out a small sarcastic chuckle, “Oh I’m sorry Colonel”. He gripped harder onto the wheel as he gritted his teeth, “I’m sorry, Celestia” he remarks in a low apologetic voice.

I looked down at my wrists, that were still red, from when he held me down. “Why did you take off your cloths back there, they weren’t burnt off that much” I softly asked him, holding back the tears.

Remorse dwelled in his eyes, at the slight glance of the red marks. “So that they think I got blown up” he said calmly as he reached out to softly stroke my wrist. His touch didn’t incite fear within me.

“I’m really sorry” he started, “I wanted them to think I was set on capturing you and bringing you back to that hell” he says with disgust. “I set up those explosions so that I could get you away” he explains as he moved his hand to hold mine tightly. “Even still, I shouldn’t have pinned you down, hurting you like that” he chokes out, softly kissing my hand.

I looked at the large man who set those explosions, capable of lying was now crying oceans as he drove. “Leo, park the car” I told him as I looked straight, “You can’t see if you’re crying”. He nodded silently as he parked in on an isolated street.

“Why would you go through the trouble of lying to me?” I questioned sadly as I gestured towards his legs. I could see his eyes drowning in his own guilt as he gulped down his nerves. “I won’t make excuses, I lied to get close to you” he confessed, clenching his fists as streams of tears continued to flow down his cheeks.

“You’re a liar” I whimpered, leaning back, “You’re probably planning on killing me and selling me for bits”. I reached over to wipe his tears, “Don’t cry, we still need to get away” I told him, “I don’t know what they’ll do to you if they catch us” I added, leaning my head against the window.

He leaned over to me, cupping a palm onto my cheek, “I’m not lying” he stated. I was unfazed by his words despite how close his face was to the point I can feel his lips brushing mine.

“Why didn’t you get us to runaway before they got to the hospital?” I whispered. He looked into my eyes, seeing if he had a chance, “They would have no trouble finding us” he responded.

I eyed the man suspiciously, “Why?” turning my head. He bit his bottom lip, conflicted, not wanting to lie or tell the truth. “Why?” I pressed, moving into his space, “Because they implanted a tracker inside me, okay?” he snapped in defeat. No words filled the car, the vibrating car was all that could be heard.

“If I tried taking it out, it’ll end up killing me in the process” he murmured tiringly, “ Celestia, Kill me” as he eyed me in exhausted defeat. I could feel my veins running cold and still with shook and disbelief.

“No” I retorted back, “I’m not going to kill you”. He smirked, yet his eyes looked so sad, “They’ll kill me before getting to you”. I pressed my forehead against his as he began to back away, stopping him in his tracks. “Then I’ll just get rid of it” I told him, closing my eyes.

“Don’t, that would kill me too” he says quietly, I froze still, opening my eyes again. “I don’t want to lie to you saying it won’t kill me when it will, its designed to kill me in contact with magic” he explains as he softly strokes my cheek.

I was at the end of my rope, “What am I supposed to do then? Don’t you dare say kill you” I snapped. He smiles softly before tilting my chin up, “Kill me” he stated in a low chilling voice.

I was so vexed that I had this urge to punch him. “You may have lied and hurt me which I’m still really angry about” I started, “But telling me to kill you, it’s only making me more angry… I don’t want to be angry at you” I confessed as tears fell down my cheeks. I tried hiding behind my hands only for him to snatch them away, so instead I buried myself into his chest. Without a word, he wrapped his arms around me.

“I love you” I confessed in a low voice as my tears dried. I pulled myself back from his chest and lightly kissed his cheek. He was bright red and startled at my sudden words and kiss. He hugged me again, only this time he kissed me on the cheek, “I love you too”

No more words were needed, we both knew that there was no way out of this. We could only take comfort in each others touch as I felt life escape from his lips. That was our first and last everlasting kiss.

“I’ll be your wings” his hands clasped my cheeks, tears rolling down from his warm blue eyes filled with love. His fleeting breathes resounded into my crumpling heart, never to be a whole heart again.

I wiped his tears with a swipe of my thump, our breathes mixed with the blowing winds .

I slid my arms around his cold neck as I drew myself in closer to him as I felt the life of his body dwindling away. “I’ll live on, as your wings” he whispered.

Without a wasted moment, a sturdy arm cloaked my waist as it drew me closer while the other grasped my cheek. Our lips an inch apart was all it took for us to take in everything about the other. The way the sun reflected of his void blue eyes while his smile could even blow the heavens away. My fingers sank into his soft wavy jet black hair while his breathe tickled my lips.

“I love you” he sniveled as agony drowned into his eyes, our foreheads connected together as I softly said, “I love you too”. With a final kiss, he became my wings.
