Nollywood actor Tony Umez is one very beloved actor in the Nigerian movie industry who has starred in a number of classic Nollywood productions. During the span of his career, Tony Umez has starred in movies including Blood Sister, Died Wretched, Demon-in-Law, Lockdown, and more. In the early 2000s - 2010s when Nollywood was on the come up, Tony Umez was very well known in the industry as the man you call if you want a person that can convincingly play "bewitched", "mumu", or "woman wrapper" as his characters were often described.

These days, because of the dawn of social media and people bringing back old media to share and circulate, new memes and jokes about Tony Umez have started circulating again. Once again, he is being recognized and known only as the man who gets "jazzed" in the movie. During a new interview with BBC Igbo, Tony Umez talked about how even though the characters he played on screen often fell under the spell of women's jazz, he himself never will. He explained why and also opened up about his twin who died in the womb. Here's what Tony Umez said.

Speaking about getting "jazzed" by women, Tony Umez said:

My biggest challenge navigating the acting space has been about people seeing you not for who you are but for the character you play [in movies]. On the other hand, it is a testimony that you played that character well. I had to always point out that I’m different from what I play in movies. I was brought up to respect women. My late mum used to tell me that, once a girl gets to 12-13 years of age and starts seeing stuff, she can become a mother.

She said to respect them from that moment on. So I respect women a lot. But I’m a frank person. No woman will take me for a ride as Tony Umez. [Unlike in the movies], voodoo can’t get to me. I’m a twin. The girl was born still.

I have, this belief as an African that you can’t hurt a twin. I respect the role of women in a man’s life but I’m not that Tony Umez [who is gullible in matters of women], although I say sorry when I should be.

Explaining more about this issue during a separate interview, Tony Umez said:

When you're given a script and they tell you this is the character you're playing, you go through the script. If you like it, you do it. And of course money is always attached to it. It has to be a good script, then money. Sometimes I tell people after all said and done, to God be the glory. Some ends are contrived. I tell them if I'm playing Tony Umez, this isn't the way the thing would end. But of course I'm not playing me. I'm playing a character. You need at some point in time to develop a thick skin and not let things bother you too much.
