Used mainly as a loosening agent, baking soda began to be widely used after 1863 when Ernest Solvay discovered a much more economical way to obtain it.
In addition to its qualities as a loosening agent, baking soda has other uses: it can be used for cleaning, in cosmetics, or to treat some ailments.
For cleaning
Why use baking soda instead of other cleaning agents?
- due to its slightly abrasive texture, it can clean any surface
- is a good disinfectant
- it has no perfume and can be used by those with allergies
- it's cheap
- it is not toxic to humans or the environment
Practical tips for using baking soda as a cleaning agent:
- dissolved in a little water removes tea or coffee stains from porcelain objects
- greatly cleans grease and stains from sinks, kitchen countertops, ceramic wall and floor tiles, pots and pans
- can replace the liquid you use to clean the toilet: spread 3-4 tablespoons of baking soda on the toilet bowl, leave on for 15 minutes; rub with a brush, it will clean and remove the unpleasant odor
- a solution of 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda and 100 ml of water excellently cleans the inside of the refrigerator
- lightly moistened baking soda can be an excellent paste with which you can clean stainless steel cutlery
- mixed with vinegar can unclog the sink
- to remove the foul odor can be used to clean the garbage bucket or plastic containers
- to clean the shower curtains you can put them in a solution of baking soda and water
- mixing 3 parts baking soda with one part water you get a paste that can be used to clean the oven from the stove or the microwave
- added to the detergent compartment of the washing machine improves the action of the detergent used
- can be used to remove scratches and pencil marks on floors or walls
- removes various stains
- a solution of baking soda and water cleans hair bristles excellently
- baking soda and water remover stains on cuffs or collars
- to refresh the colors of the carpets sprinkled with baking soda over them and lightly rub with a dry brush
- a paste of baking soda and vinegar can be used to clean any type of grill
- with a solution of baking soda + vinegar + lemon juice, you can clean the whole house
Other uses of baking soda in the household:
- placed in the sandboxes of cats removes the unpleasant odor
- added to water prolongs the life of flowers in vases
- added in ashtrays removes the specific odor
- if you leave a container in the fridge in which you have baking soda, it won't smell bad.
- put a little baking soda in the plastic gloves you use in the household, they will get into your hands much easier
- a solution of baking soda and water can be used to wash fruits and vegetables
- mix one part baking soda with one part water and one part vinegar to make a solution in which you can put the brushes you paint with, they will not dry out
- use a little baking soda to remove traces of glue from the windows
- baking soda sprinkled around the house prevents the invasion of ants and beetles
Cosmetic Uses
- applied with circular motions on a slightly damp face is an excellent scrub
- it can be used as a whole body scrub, either plain or mixed with a little olive oil
- added to the shampoo you usually use acts as a hair conditioner
- used simply or mixed with peroxide successfully replaces toothpaste (mix 2 parts baking soda with one part peroxide)
- applied on the soles prevents unpleasant odor
- is an excellent deodorant, you can use it either used simply applied under the armor as a base for a homemade deodorant
- applied to hands removes persistent odors (eg fishy odor)
- helps relieve pain from insect bites
- added to baby bath water relieves diaper rash
