This is one of the questions about ableism that annoys me off. I am sure it will annoy disabled people. To question their capabilities when it's not your business to know or judge on. I remember I met a asian guy off hinge in Max Brenner at Robina. He asked me " are you capable driving yourself ?" . I had to be honest with him even though it was a challenging question to answer and i would be more comfortable talking about with a medical specialist or a doctor.

I haven't paid for driving lessons for a few years. I was rushing to get my P's and i was not thinking about the seriousness of driving. Also the risks too . I was stubborn and did not listen to the instructor enough. I was immature and i was like 19/20 years of age. I think this has happened to a lot of young people under 25 years old who rush getting their license , and not thinking about social awareness.

I remember i was talking to my psychologist last year about a different topic and she said the longer you drift off from a person or a task , you look back on it.She was right.Around the time i took a break from driving lessons, a accident happened to someone i knew. I do not want to disclose the person's name. But this person was working at the time of the accident and he crashed into a tree. But when i looked at the area of the accident i realised it was a long steep slope.Trucks have different road laws compared to cars. A person told me this.I believe he lost control of the truck because trucks may have a hard time controlling their speeds especially on steep hills.

He was badly injured and he was in recovery for a long time after the injury. I would have really bad anxiety driving again after a traumatic accident.I am no driving instructor who specialises in driving trucks or a person who is the physics field who knows about driving theories to have in-depth knowlege of the possibiblities of what happened on that day of the crash.By the way this person did not have a disability.

Able bodied people should'nt be asking this question because some people who are able bodied have people around them , who are less skeptical about their driving capabilities. Because they are able bodied they receive less prejudice, yet some do not abide the law as they get offences for speed and drink driving, Factors such as drugs and tiredness may come into play.

I want to learn how to drive again. After hearing that someone i know had an accident 3 years earlier,i realised i needed to take my time and do not rush into driving.I have some fears of getting into a accident and making my parents angry. Also , having fears of being liable in a civil lawsuit and getting an criminal record at the at the same time for causing a accident . Embarassing my parents by going to jail and heading to court.

But my advice to disabled people:

Show you parents that you are socially aware about the risks that comes with driving and discuss your reservations about driving with your parents. Tell them you can discuss with a doctor or a medical specialist who have a specialist understanding of your condition. This will ease your worries and you parents will know that you are a sensible mature adult. But regardless of medical advice you need to be real because you will get stigma and ableist comments.

Remember, Your parents cannot stop you from driving you are the one who can prove your parents you can be a better driver regardless of barriers.

- Under the eyes of the law they know the best because they may have teamed up with medical experts to make laws in regards to driving in your state or country

-Under the law the motor registry in your state or country have the power to do that. They have the power to revoke or cancel your license.

- They inform you on their website about what disabilites or conditions that can allow you drive but you can drive at least you are complying with their rules and regulations.Only if you have your conditions under control.

- the motor registry in your state may allow you to drive only at least you have modifications in your car in order to drive more safely.

- Another condition the motor registry may remind you about will include: yourself being honest with the roads registry about your conditions, filling medical forms and giving medical evidence and documents from medical specialist to give proof about what advice they gave you in regards to driving.

- They can inform people on the website on what conditions or disabilites that are off limits to drive a vehicle for example , dementia or epilepsy.
