Social media: self-destructive?

Or is it self-healing?

We're still affected by previous generations and their traumas. Are you able to see that? It's like everything dark and sick is being purged in front of our eyes, every day, through social media.

I saw a washing liquid Ad the other day - that one where an Asian girl puts a black man into a washing machine and by doing so he comes out of it fair and Asian. I had to really pause and wonder, who in hell would even have such an idea? Can you imagine someone pitching that to a brand and the CEO of that company being like - “Yaaaas Queen, let's do it!”

I'm not Asian and I'm not black so I don't have to think about these things every day. The fact that people of color get exposed to such messed up racial judgments on the daily is good for me to be aware of. Maybe the world was always as crazy as it is now but we just didn't know - because we didn't have social media. We didn't see the realities people lived, we only saw a narrative that was created by big corporations and we thought - this is the real world. Oh, so this is a woman and that's how she's supposed to behave for her existance to be acceptable. Oh, so this is a "real" man and that is what masculinity looks like. Oh, so this is a gay person and why do they seem to love pink so much? Oh, so this is a trans person - usually a confused teenager or sexual deviant. Oh, so this is a black person - a "thug" from the streets? Oh, so this is an Asian person - just the usual geek, etc.

Those people we saw on TV representing a certain segment of the community were constructed mostly through a white&privileged™ man's perspective as they were and still are making key decisions in the media. They decided what we could and couldn't see play out in public. That filter never allowed us to see the real world and it might be the reason why it feels so shocking. We only saw that one perspective and we bought into it as the ultimate reality.

Social media flipped the script. It allowed us to see the many facets of people of color, trans and non-binary individuals. We can see women who express their feminity in unexpected ways and men who don't fit the glamorized toxic type and who'd actually prefer to stay home and make dinner while us ladies make money.

Now, we know, the world is a very interesting place with a ton of different people living very diverse lives. There was never a time like this in human history - where we could all witness each other, so intimately, through a screen. It's actually fascinating. Maybe that's why it's also so addictive - we're naturally inclined to connect and understand and empathize, well, except that 1% of psychopaths who make life miserable for everyone. The majority of people is however good and enough developed to be able to create a safe world for everyone, right?

Maybe the reason there's so much fear and hate is because we don't truly know each other. How can you love someone you don't understand? How can you empathize with something you know nothing about? It's like being in therapy and acknowledging all these different parts of you that you were previously neglecting because you thought you could only be loved if you lead with a certain aspect of yourself and not all of you. Maybe that is what is happening to the planet. Maybe it only looks like self-destruction but what if we're actually becoming whole?
