Rejoice In The Diversity Of Life

It Takes All Kinds

We should all rejoice in the diversity of life. I don’t understand why some people, especially these so-called conservative Americans so big in the media these days, make such a big deal about people that are different from them.

This is June, and it is joyfully celebrated across the country as Pride month and includes all LGBTQ members. This acronym stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and “queer” people, of all nationalities, ethnic groups, and cultures.

The rainbow flag will be waving proudly all over America this month as these often discriminated against groups are finally getting the recognition and respect they deserve. And rightly so. Nobody has the right to discriminate against other people who do not align with their own gender and sexual identities.

The anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New Yorks Greenwich Village on June 28, 1969, as a reaction to yet another systematic discriminatory police raid against gay bars will now once again be officially recognized and proudly celebrated on this date with parades, marches, and rallies.

There is no one “right” way to express the sexuality you were born with. It is a basic human right that doesn’t need much explanation. People come in all colors, shapes, sizes, and sexual identities. This is just a fact of nature.

The far right-wing in America today are desperately seeking to turn back the clock to an America that never was by attempting to frantically pass legislation against gay and trans people. Christian right-wing homophobia has never been higher.

These right-wing bible thumpers are pretending there never were LGBTQ people when they were growing up. That is a lie. The truth is that homosexuality in one form or another has always been part of human history.

Ancient Greece and Rome celebrated homosexuality openly. They had publicly accepted examples of this every day from the Greek city-state monarchs to the Roman Emperor and their same-sex partners on down to even the lower classes.

Anybody who has ever looked at the statuary of these cities can see examples of this. The more modern Italian statues of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci can also certainly be regarded as homoerotic.

So what’s all the fuss about? I mean, who cares? Whatever people do to express their sexuality is their own private business. Why do some people appoint themselves as judges over other people’s sex lives? What goes on behind closed doors is certainly nobody’s business but their own.

And it certainly should not be a lame excuse by right-wing politicians for discrimination against people who are different than them in public either. There are more than a few politicians who are openly gay anyway.

I just don’t get it. Is it fear-driven? Are these right-wing fanatics so afraid of any homosexual temptation inside of their own tortured psyches that they feel compelled to attempt to pass legislation against others who choose a different path of sexual expression? Who just want to be themselves?

Could this be the reason Florida recently passed a “Don’t Say Gay” law? Is this the real reason that Florida is trying to marginalize LGBTQ activity, to the point of burning books and instructing teachers not to teach any alternative options to so-called “straight” sex? Is this why Texas wants to pass similar legislation even more stringently anti-gay than they already have?

What a waste of time! What foolish hypocrisy! Whatever happened to live and let live? Different strokes for different folks? The steady assault on LGBTQ rights seems to be just a further extension of the far-right lunatic fringe conspiracy to replace democracy in America with autocracy. This is just plain wrong, straight up and simply wrong.

As Rodney King once asked plaintively,

“Can’t we all just get along
