Let's Get Something Straight
by: Nerissha Hunt

People treat you the way you allow them to. True statement indeed. But what about when someone thinks you stole their “thunder”, meaning the attention is no longer on them? You have started a war.
When a person feels “large and in charge,” usually its because no one has put them in their place or simply because people are just used to the person acting that way and they ignore it. They either don’t want to be bothered with that person or they are so used to the person acting that way and they feel that’s it not worth the time to set the person straight.
Well, I have a problem with that. That’s why we have so much bullying in the world. If people would stop people when things are bad instead of letting things go from bad to worse, then we wouldn’t have this concept of someone feeling like they are large and in charge or that you stole their thunder. The person should have been put in their place a long time ago.
First, we’ll talk about jobs. We have bosses, managers, and supervisors. But there is that one employee who knows it all and nobody can tell them anything. Well, guess what? If you know so much, why aren’t you a boss, manager or supervisor? You know why? Because you have more mouth than knowledge. A person with knowledge doesn’t boast and brag about how much they know. They know their capabilities and they are humble. They are content with the job they have until they receive a promotion.
Next, we are moving on to church. Sensitive subject. People seem to forget that the Pastor is in charge. But everybody wants to be in the spotlight. They want to be the best singer. The best deacon. The best anything. News flash, we are all a team. Why are we against each other? Some people feel that they deserve a position because they have been here the longest. I don’t care how old you are. If you are wrong, so be it.
But there are bullies in church. No one sits them down either. Here’s where stealing thunder really comes in at. The choir. Oh Lord, one of the biggest disagreements you will ever have. People refer to some people as tone deaf, meaning you can't sing at all and how dare you get up and try. But some people say that other people can sing like angels, or as they say, "sing you under the pews." These name-callers as I call them, say "I could have sang the song better than that and he/she needs to sit down somewhere."
Well, okay. Good. Then get up and do that. But you know why you didn’t do it? Because your mouth got bigger than doing what you said you could do. You thought about singing in front of people and realized, hey, I don’t think I can do this. So, don’t let your mouth get you in a put on the spotlight situation and then you get stage fright.
Peoples’ mouths tend to get them in trouble all the time, so people need to be careful with what they are saying. As the saying goes, there is a time to speak and a time to shut up. More people need to learn when it’s time to speak and when it’s time to shut up. If you feel like the world owes you something, you are sadly mistaken. Respect is the only way you will get what you want.
To end my story, here is a poem I wrote called Let’s Get Something Straight.
Let’s get something straight, you can’t steal thunder
It’s a weather process, just like lightning that strikes, up, over and under
We all have a light and we let it shine
But don’t think that your light shines brighter than mine
Don’t flatter yourself, it's not all about you
There is selfishness and selflessness, learn the difference between the two
Now that things have been set straight
You know that thunder can’t be stolen because it’s a process, not a statement
