A Timely Investment
Joe didn’t want to go to the careers fair. He had much better things to do with his time… His mother, however, had no interest in his plans. She already had his clothes ironed and hanging on the handle of his wardrobe.

When I was a little girl, my family and I would lay a blanket on our back deck and lie out to look at the stars. We lived in a very rural town, which meant that the stars shone their brightest in the completely black sky. We would try to let our eyes take in the billions of sparkling lights dancing along the milky way. We searched for shooting stars and sometimes made wishes by mistake on a sneaky satellite sweeping along the night sky.

Friday “Did you hear about Emerson? He found $20,000 in a bathroom stall at Panera Bread.” “Didn’t he just get a $20,000 hiring bonus?”
Navaris DarsonPublished 3 years ago in HumansRainbow is my favorite color
As a little girl, I didn’t understand why I had to choose one or the other. Why couldn’t I do it all and like everything and everyone? When someone asked me what my favorite color was, I couldn’t choose one so I said, “Rainbow!” I didn’t want any colors to feel left out. Was I left or right-handed? Um, neither... both! What’s your favorite this-or-that? I never knew and usually just picked something random to satisfy the questioner.

I have the worst habit of playing things over and over again in my mind; the same memory, shifted and permuted and warped with each recall as I try to think about what I might have done differently. How my life may have turned out if I had said something a little more smooth, stopped fiddling with my jacket zipper, or even just reached out to hold her. Ruminating. Apparently this is called ruminating. The reason this is bad is because you can never change the past. Do you know that? I don’t know if I fully do.
J. W. KennellyPublished 3 years ago in HumansDear boyfriend, I’m leaving…
Hey, I was there this morning when you left for work. It so happens that, if you are reading this, it means that I’m not there anymore. By now, I’ll be taking a cappuccino at Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, waiting for the flight that’ll take me back to Brazil. The following pages were taken from my personal journal. That little black book that I bought so I could write more. That one I told you’d become my first book, remember? I guess you don’t. While I was paying for it, I’ve heard over my shoulder your voice asking: “Are you finally writing it or is it just another silly idea that you will let unfinished inside a drawer?”

Ham, Lettuce, no pickles. It is Sunday after all. Queuing in the bakery, the sun shines through the storefront and lands in the small of her back, feeling like a warm hug. Her long, thick dark hair gently sways side to side as she subtly dances to the music that’s playing. As Ted would say - any day that you’re lucky enough to be alive, is a good day.

"Hurry up, babe! They're about to start the tour." Kiley said sweetly but urgently to Dominic as he rummaged through the trunk of their car. It was filled with odds and ends. If you named a random object, it probably could be found in the back of that car. Dominic liked to be overly prepared, and that truck was their emergency safety kit. Dominic was always just as prepared in the classroom with his 8th graders.

Tat, tat-tat, tat her pen nervously taps the empty page. I’m not a singer. Poet? yes. Singer? No. What was I thinking? Anna ponders to herself, as she tosses the pen onto the table. “Ahhhha!” She pulls the pencil out of her bun, flips her head back, and her long brown curls waterfall over the iron chair; as her eyes yearn for inspiration in the sky.

I am no longer naive to the past. I open the third eye once blind to the opportunity of the new world. Physical is temporary as the internal is eternal. I walk like thunder. Crashing through mountains as if I could notice kings bowing. I am here to create outside of the realm we stare right through. Warriors sent here to crucify the nightmare. The illusions that rob the young of their thoughts. I am filled with the air of titans. The ones of the fractured timeline. Bleeding into this place like fever dreams. Contagious and infecting all the ones levitating. The light is blinding. A turbulence you can not ignore. Why should you? Where are you going? Do you know? I have decided what I am and where I am going. In fact I have become it and I wander seeking others to help me build an empire. My why is deeply rooted into my soul. A princess, an oracle, a brother, and the versions of me from infinite wisdoms. I no longer wear the mask seeking to be adored. I am simply here to illuminate. Myself and others who choose to see me.

The girl runs her fingers down the side of the thin mattress, her tiny nails catching on the worn fabric of the sheet. Her hand travels a scant foot below her pallet and then across the floor in search of the found treasure she placed there the night before, just before her mother turned off the light, just before her older sister, told her to lie still now!
