Is Saying "You're Welcome" Obsolete?

JK, lol, and "no worries" seem to be our mainstream staples for ending our conversational interactions. Although sweet and responsive. They just don't seem to carry the same recognition of appreciation as "Thank you" and "You're Welcome" do to me. I love words and the way they transmute emotions while weaving visual acceptance, enduring expectations we presume. See—I love words.

Fading Pleasantries

Maybe, I'm old fashioned and sensitive (I am), but I truly enjoy letting someone know I appreciate their conversation, their effort to assist me, or notice I am approaching a door as they hold it open for me to walk through. "Thank you" with a look towards their eyes to signify "your help is much obliged." The eye contact with the word "you're welcome" solidifying a partnership in this brief endeavor we successfully navigated. A wonderful dance that crosses cultures, genders, and socioeconomic statues.

Welcome

Its meaning: inviting, pleasing courteous. One word extending acceptance and a peaceful exit.

Non-Committal Tech Savviness

In this day and age we exchange stumpy terms in passing, resulting in ending connections swiftly. We continue to our mundane deadlines of completing shopping list, text responses, and destinational pursuits with the ingrained common courtesy flourishing our brief interactions. See—I like words. It's responsive to give a head nod, quick "no worries" or "no problem," but does it transmit an even reciprocity the words "thank you" and "you're welcome" bring? Does it communicate understanding of the saving grace the patient gesture of holding the door, much needed advice given, or extension of understanding appreciated and received?

Depth of Communication

Can we do it? Can we verbally respond to the store clerk that says "Thanks for coming in" with eye contact, and a "you're welcome" before we grab our bag of goodies? My observation during my people watching expeditions is—chivalry is not dead and neither is decency, no matter the frequent post and news headlines of hate crimes and police brutality. There is hope in common civility. The action of holding doors open, helping someone in need fills a void. An immediate need not as obvious in verbal communication. Ending our interactions with a full response of "you're welcome" encapsulates this moment in time we interfaced, and solved a transaction of affairs that may have interfered with our continual peace of mind. The response 'no worries' or 'no problem' just doesn't do it for me—at times. Thank you for reading and "you're Welcome" for the verbal awareness this may have brought you.
