International Women's Day and the Hypocrisy of the Media

A woman's taken on how the media treats women they don't like.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex

International Women’s Day, celebrated on the 8th of March annually is meant to be a focal point in the movement for women’s rights. Highlighting the various contributions women have made in our society, which is great. I totally agree that we should highlight the amazing achievements these women have made. Women are incredible, and if you disagree thats a you problem. Obviously the significance of International Women’s Day is not lost on me. Women are still not being paid equally as men (even though they are just as just as qualified), their rights to a safe abortion are being taken away, and the causal misogyny that most women have to face on a daily basis is appalling. We need to do better people, it’s 2021 this behaviour is not acceptable.

But what really upsets me about International Women’s Day is seeing how some publications have the nerve to publish articles championing the success and progress women have made, when they have spent almost three years tearing down a woman. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s the way the British media have treated Meghan Markle. To summarise everything that has happened, the British media decided that a black woman had no place in the royal family and spent every available second hurling abuse at her. In fact the abuse was so bad she left the country. Like any respectable husband and father Harry supported his wife, going so far to break away from the royal family.

So why am I talking about this? The answer dear reader is because all morning I’ve been seeing tweets from The Daily Mail (barf) about what was said in the much anticipated interview with Oprah. In fact if you look at the Daily Mail’s website almost every single headline is about Meghan.

The audacity politicians have implying the racism Meghan faced was untrue.

It's not just the Daily Mail, the amount of vitriol I’ve seen on Twitter in the days before the interview is shocking. In fact, Piers Morgan (barf) tweeted about Meghan Markle 57 times in the last week alone!! He mostly accused the couple of wanting to destroy the British monarchy and that everything Meghan had to say was a bunch of lies.

I would love to hear exactly what the Queen has worked 'so hard for', was it stealing from Asian and African countries?

The fact that so many publications have questioned the legitimacy of a woman saying the bullying she endured nearly drove her to suicide is disgusting. The fact that it’s happening on International Women’s Day just shows how sincere some of these publications are about celebrating the success of women around the world. What’s happening to Meghan and Harry is disgusting and the British media should be held solely responsible. Instead of going after an alleged pedophile, they are choosing to attack a woman who married the man she loves.

The full interview will be aired in the UK tonight and I will be watching it in its entirety because its International Women’s Day and I want to support a woman whose brave enough to tell her story. And to the members of the media who continues to tear her down and discredit her words, you’re just proving without reasonable doubt that you are the problem. I also hope those publication finds their Crown Jewels and start investigating why a member of the royal family has any association with a known pedophile ring.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my little opinion piece. In all honestly I love what International Women’s Day stands for but I will not stand by when the media relentlessly tears a woman down for absolutely no reason.
