If Today Was Your Last Day

It's like playing Russian Roulette, this crazy virus.

To Whom it May Concern:

I know words do not always express how people feel, but now more than any other time, words will have to do until I can perhaps be lucky enough to hug you and thank you personally.

The doctors and nurses are on the front lines in this fight against the virus, and they deserve all the recognition they get and more. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Paramedics, Certified Nurses Assistants (CNAs), and any type of medical staff is overworked and over stressed right now. Professional doctors are seeking psychological help to deal with what they have seen and been through, but some cannot recover and have taken their own lives. Police would probably be the next group that are in danger because they are out there dealing with the crazies that would just as soon cough on them as look at them. Sure, they can be arrested, maybe even sent to prison for attempted murder for trying to give another person the virus, but that can't bring back a life they may have taken. The next category of heroes are the truck drivers who are willing to make long trips so that grocery shelves and gas pumps are full. These men and women not only take a risk of getting the virus, these folks can't even get a hot meal or a place to rest for a few hours on the road. Come on America. What it the truckers refused to drive and deliver. They should be helped in any way possible. The last group of heroes are the people who stock shelves, clean rooms and mop floors, check out clerks, plumbers, electricians, and any service type of person who would have to go into someone else's home and take the risk. Cable installers would be another group.

This letter, however, is written to all the people that don't get daily bravos and are not even in the background. This letter is to all the men and women who have given of themselves and lifted the spirits of so many. These are the people who sit on balconies and play music, or open the window and sing to the people who are stuck inside but can still enjoy hearing them. This bravo is to the ladies who played tennis across the rooftops together, and the couple who got married in spite of the pandemic. It may not have been the wedding either one of them dreamed of, but it was one that will never be forgotten; a story for the children and grandchildren, and after all, life is about memories, remembering the good times together as well as the times that were stressful and frightening.

These are the creative and giving people who share their gifts with the world, and those who are willing to do that and look on the bright side will be the survivors when all of this mess is over. It takes a certain personality to be able to stand on the balcony and serenade the neighborhood, even though you may have a beautiful voice, it still takes guts to do it. I applaud all of these men and women for their undying ability to always try and help their fellow man in any way they can. These are the people who lift the weight off our shoulders and make us feel like everything is going to get better, and they are the ones who are the very glue between body and spirit. My hat is off to these men and women and I hope they keep on being creative, whether it is playing sports across rooftops, singing, dancing, or playing an instrument, it is all part of what lifts us up. If our minds are allowed to sink into the darkness and panic, we take our own lives or sit in the corner and feel that all is lost. The best weapon we have right now are our minds, so thank you those who lift us up!

About the Creator

Denise Willis

I love art as much as writing, and when the world feels dark, I get out my paper and colored pencils and draw while listening to music. When my husband and I were going through a divorce, journaling is what got me through that..
