Raising a Gold Medal to the cameras, an Athlete has achieved their life's dream. Year after year of hard graft has brought them to the pinnacle, yet we only see their journey in its twilight.
There is no secret ingredient to success, but by following in the footsteps of winners, you too can become a beacon of achievement in your field.
In reality, the vast majority of what makes a winner is mindset, a mindset which is available to everyone, you just need to be adaptable to change and happy to embrace it.
Time Management is key
Cultivating success is about more than just an explosion of creativity or a habit of over achieving. The building blocks of success are built on solid foundations of habits that we all have complete control over. The first being an ability to manage time effectively.
The most dangerous type of bad time management is procrastination. Others, however, exist. Diffusion, a lack of concentration, a failure to leverage technology or build a system, distraction, and a focus on low-priority activities are all factors that can lead to under performance.
Do what winners do to develop a winning mindset: take positive control of your time.
There are three keys to time management and avoiding procrastination, in my opinion:
1. Make a timetable for yourself.
2. Keep distractions at bay.
3. Plan for a win early in the day and build on it.
Don't assume that controlling your time is something that just happens. Of course, excellent habits may be formed. However, excellent time management involves more than just a set of behaviours. Each day, time management takes a little amount of concentrated work.
Winners don't merely go through the motions of excellent habits without thinking. Those excellent habits don't appear on their own. Winners appreciate the work required to manage their time daily.
See the difference?
It's all in your head. Positive thinking is the result of good behaviours, not the cause. You may have poor behaviours and a positive mentality at the same time. But you won't be able to keep up your poor behaviours for long!
Cut out the excuses
Sure, there may be times when you fall short of your goals. Where Winners separate themselves from underachievers is that they learn from their mistakes and act on them to banish failure. So, if you fail to meet your objective, take proactive steps to decrease or eliminate any potential causes of failure.
On the other hand, should you rely on excuses to alleviate the pain of a mistake, they become a crutch. Worse, they can infect your thoughts, leading to a cycle of failure.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal; It is the courage to continue that counts
Be courageous enough to make mistakes in your Life, they will happen, and they are the stepping stones to a brighter future. Wear your mistakes as badges of honour, they gleam much brighter when you are basking in the light of eventual success.
Positive Influences are essential
This does not just imply that you should associate with individuals who are more successful than you. Being in the middle of the pack in your social group is natural and will spur you on to achieve things in your life that you may not have considered previously.
Winners make a conscious effort to associate with individuals who share their goals. Be it surrounding themselves with individuals who want to see them succeed, or even by giving time to rivals who want to beat them to the next step. Competition is part of Human nature, so why not embrace it?
Your best bet is to gather a group of People in your life who can act as counterparts for your success.
If your ambition is to be a Writer, for example, make sure you have a network of others who work in Publishing, Reporting and Journalism. Each has a hand in the other, all support one another, and all can open paths in the respective careers, which can be a huge benefit.
Meet with one another regularly so you can discuss your progress and how you can move each other into the phase of your Journey.
Finally, don't waste your time with those who only want to shoot you down. Especially if you're just starting off in your profession.
Positive Mindsets breed Positivity
Your frame of mind has a larger impact on your ability to succeed than you might think.
"Whether you think you can or think that you can't, you're probably right"
Have you ever heard that one before? That's Henry Ford telling you exactly what you need to know about your mindset. Whatever your aspirations are, you'll get halfway there by believing in your ability.
Try starting your day by reading a motivational quote, or reading an extract from a book on a Winning mentality, it won't be long until you start to adopt the advice you're given and apply it to your own walk of life.
Ask for Help
Last, but certainly not least, is in the humility to ask for help from someone. Just remember, very few People become successful without the help of someone before them. Whether they are a mentor, or just someone in their life that they trust and share their thoughts with, every Millionaire, Gold Medallist or World Champion will tell you that they confide in someone.
Perhaps the largest mistake we make is in believing that we are able to blaze a path on our own, setting ourselves up for mistakes that we rarely recover from.
