In this Modern Age, there is a revolution going on between the "old" and the "new" way of thinking when it comes to relationships. As the divorce rate climbs higher, we celebrate because life is too short to live unhappily. But part of the learning process in life comes directly from intimate relationships—yet many of us today find ourselves single. Nature ensures that we continuously seek out a mate by the modern ritual we call Dating.

Dating can be described in one word: Complicated. If you’ve made it this far, chances are you have a career, kids, and custody arrangements. Add to that your hobbies, friends, and the need for sleep—it’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. So here are the rules: there are no rules. Each person you come in contact with has been raised with different morals. But I’ve come up with a few guidelines that can hopefully make your dating experiences much more pleasurable.

For Women

1. Always be yourself.

If you feel like speaking your mind, do it. True intimacy comes from showing your true self. The right guy for you will fall in love with all of your quirky habits too.

2. Let go of any expectations.

William Shakespeare said, “Expectation is the root of all heartache.” The only thing you should be expecting from a date is to have fun. If you’re not having a good time, then don’t see that dude again. Forget about that damn internal clock—at least through dinner. If you expect nothing, you will never be disappointed. Trust me.

3. Keep your options open…

OK ladies, here’s the deal. The "we are dating" thing actually means nothing. When you look at your tax form, there’s a box you check for "married" and one for "single." Have you ever seen a box that says "in a committed relationship"? Uh, no. Keep in mind that unless he has proposed, you are single…

For Men

1. Just be honest…

Listen up, gentlemen: if you are always honest, you’ll never end up the bad guy. If you are looking for marriage and children, say so. If you just got divorced and are looking for fun, say it. Even something as simple as needing some space is something you should verbalize. Falling off the face of the earth is unacceptable unless you just really need to get rid of a stage five clinger.

2. Use some common sense.

Every woman is different, but if you are getting the sense that your dirty joke is a little too much for a second date, then you’re probably right. Please use your head…you know, the one above your neck.

3. Eyes up here.

Every woman wants to feel that she is desirable, but not right away. Most women need to be heard and want to feel like you want something other than to just get laid. But my cleavage does look pretty great, doesn’t it?
