When you understand how to be confident, you can apply it to all of your objectives and obstacles in your daily life. Few people recognize, however, that gaining self-confidence is similar to creating a muscle: it expands in proportion to the degree of performance demanded of it.

Here are 10 tried-and-true methods for overcoming a lack of self-confidence and achieving more.

1. Expand your knowledge

Sign up for a course at night or read a book you’ve been curious about.

Learning new things is great, it's a way to exercise your brain and keep up with the latest trends. I find it makes me feel more confident about what I can do.

2. Find out what you can do for your partner or a friend.

I’ve started helping my mom with small tasks because she doesn’t have as much time as I do now. By doing this, I feel good about myself since I know that they now have more free time to spend with family or friends.

3. Workout in the gym

Working out at the gym can make you look and feel great. Numerous studies have shown that working out can not only increase your feeling of well-being, but also boost your sense of self-worth.

4. Participate at a networking event

Focusing on what you can offer instead of what you might get feels a lot less tricky. You'll find it a lot easier to be yourself and connect with others this way. It's not all about meeting people so they'll buy from you,... after all!

When this is done, you'll come off as very confident and someone who people will want to turn to again and again!

5. Make a list of the things that are important to you.

If you’re not including these habits in your life, you’ll need to start incorporating them.

Here's an example of how you can make your otherwise boring work life more enjoyable. For instance, if your daily routine has been lame so far but you want it to be fun, then tackle this. Turn data entry into a personal speed contest, paper filing into 'screen-free' time and interactions with your colleague.

6. Get Rid of Negativity in Your Life

List everything you're putting up with in your life. Then think about how to get rid of, reduce or improve each one.

Personally, I like to write with pen & paper because it just feels better than on screen.

Whenever possible, I start my list with the most important items and finish it off with the least. That way, if anything urgent does crop up, I can deal with it first.

7. Rejoice in your victories, big and little.

It’s important to celebrate the small successes you’ve had and take some pride in your accomplishments.

8. Get to Know New People

Go and have a conversation with someone you don’t know. You may be surprised what you’ll learn about them or maybe even who you'll meet.

You can also make this trait become even stronger by taking on different social situations at work. Something like this will do wonders for your confidence.

9. Take on a task to which you would normally say no.

Next time you hesitate about taking an opportunity, give it a go! Life is too short to spend it worrying. You have everything you need to deal with whatever is thrown at you.

10. Every day, do one thing that makes you smile.

You could do something as simple as sending a thank you email to a colleague, leave a friendly surprise on your partner's desk when they walk in from work, or write them a letter telling them that you're grateful about their support

Life is too short to be drudgery, and we should all try to make it fun!
