For those of you who speak Spanish and who come from south of the border, I owe you an apology.
I recently asked on Quora "Is it wrong to dislike Latinos because of some of them are Catholic?"
My response came off as rather offensive from those who answered my question, so much so that Quora had it removed. My mom was upset when I told her this as well.
Which is why I am writing this post.
I am sorry for attacking you in this way.
I have seen episodes of TV shows where your ethnic group was depicted in a rather poor image, which is why I asked such a stupid question. I was more upset with the way your ethnic group was depicted rather than you being mostly Catholic.
Here are the episodes:
Supergirl Season 3 episode 3
Batwoman Season 1 episode 10
Both of these episodes have Latina characters who are disowned by their parents for being lesbian. Batwoman doesn't introduce the homophobic parents, but she mentions how her parents disapproved. Supergirl introduces a homophobic father, who sent his daughter to live with her aunt when she came out lesbian. A mother is mentioned being just as homophobic as the father, but she is never seen.
Stargirl Season 1 episode 4
In this episode it shows how Yolanda Montenz (Yvette Monreal) went from being a class presidential candidate to a social pariah.
The mistake she made was that she took a raunchy photo of herself to send to her boyfriend, only to have her rival Cindy Burman (Meg DeLacy) having been given the photo instead and then had spread the photo to the entire school.
Three months later at the time the series begins, she is still grounded by her parents until "they" say so. At the end of the episode, she beseeches her parents to forgive her, but they decide to be full of shit and not forgive her, because her "father" talks about some crap about how she dishonored the family and her mother says some bullshit about not being able going back to the way things were before the incident.
Her brother defends her (his asshole father silenced him rather than letting him speak in her defense in this episode) and Courtney Whitmore helps get her spirits up by helping her be the next Wildcat.
I know I should not have let episodes of TV shows that I like define my imagine of you. I watch these shows to get away from problems I hear too much about in real life.
But I don't get why they depict your ethnicity in such a way.
There are enough White Americans who behave in such a manner. The Bundy Militia, The Duggar Family, The Turpin Family, Westboro Baptist, various Evangelicals and Southern Baptists, Neo-Confederates, pro-lifers and the various so-called faith healers, the list is endless of how Americans can be scum.
But they are white, not immigrants like those of you from Latin American countries.
I have no problem with you Latin Americans coming to the United States to seek a better life, work a respectable job, and send your kids to college. My family at one point in American history came to this country as immigrants too and they quite possibly had to endure the same crap you guys do, despite the fact that they were as white as me. But like you Hispanics, they wanted the same for my family as do you.
I never disliked you guys. I've never had any reason to dislike your ethnicity. Not even the country you come from or the cultural events you willing to promote here in the United States, has been a problem for me.
I just don't like the idea of Hispanics having fundamentalist Christian views.
Because as I explained before, that there are Americans (like myself) who are tired as hell with white people who haved lived here in America all their life and having such viewpoints. These are the same so-called Christians who don't speak out against children in cages, deny Covid-19 facts while throwing a fit and committing crimes over having to wear a mask, and of course they justify rape when not advocating violence against LGBTQ people.
The worst I save for last.
These "people" think that Trump is the Messiah and that the world will end of he loses the 2020 election.
Don't have to be a Christian to think this is crap
So you can see why I would be upset if those of you from the Hispanic ethnic groups started developing views like this. We don't need anymore people thinking like this, because if Hispanics behaved like this, I would be disappointed.
Because I would rather see you and have the same right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, instead of appeasing white folk and stooping to their levels.
I'm want to work with you.
I want to regard you as my brothers and sisters.
I want the same success for your family and friends, as my family and friends would have for me.
I want you remain in this country despite the intolerance towards your ethnicity
But mostly importantly:
I beseech you on my knees for your forgiveness for my intolerance.
