Anna's Botanicals (Ep. 9)

EXT - MORNING - GEORGE'S PROPERTY

(CAMERA POV ON PROPERTY/CAR/GEORGE)

GEORGE pulls up and parks on the road. On the property GEORGE purchased, excavation has started for the driveway and the foundation of the house. A JCB bucket is working to dig a bit down for the foundation while a bulldozer flattens out the driveway from the road to the house site. GEORGE gets out of the car and walks over to see the progress. The CONTRACTOR spots him and walks over.

GEORGE

How’s it going?

CONTRACTOR

Almost done with the groundwork. Do you have a drawing or a blueprint of the house yet?

GEORGE

No, should have it in the next day or so.

CONTRACTOR

Alright.

GEORGE

Could you make a twenty foot by fifteen foot garden plot, just over there, please and border it with logs?

GEORGE points off to the southern side of the house.

CONTRACTOR

Sure. Will do.

GEORGE

Thank you.

GEORGE smiles, looks at the house site, nods and walks off.

INT - DAY - ANNA’S SHOPPE

(CAMERA POV FROM FRONT LEFT CORNER OF SHOPPE)

ANNA has opened the shoppe and has her back turned to the door, cleaning off the back counter as RILEY walks in.

ANNA

Good morning, Riley.

RILEY stops in his tracks.

RILEY

Wish I knew how you did that.

ANNA

Oh, I think you know how.

RILEY walks over to ANNA as she walks to a display and rearranges it a bit. He spies the ring on her finger, a Sterling Silver Rainbow Topaz Oval.

RILEY

Is that the ring George gave you? It’s beautiful.

ANNA

Yes, it is. It was such a pleasant surprise.

RILEY

Am sorry I missed it. (takes a deep, thoughtful breath) You know, he came and asked for my permission to marry you.

ANNA

He what?!

RILEY

Yes, a few days before the festival.

ANNA

Wow. I’m speechless.

RILEY

It impressed me too. After all we’ve seen him say and do. And you have changed as well, your guard is coming down.

ANNA

Well, yes, as well it should, right? Besides it’s hard to keep my guard up around him. Especially knowing what we know now.

RILEY

Soulmates looks good on you.

ANNA

It feels good as well. We had a blast at the festival, it just made the connection even stronger, I think, if that is even possible. I’m sure you could find the video on social media. Paris took the video.

RILEY

I’ll look for it. Do you have time tonight for me?

ANNA

Of course, just basic or something more?

RILEY

Just basic, please. See you at five, unless you have something else planned?

ANNA

Not that I know of, five would be fine.

RILEY

Alright, see you then.

RILEY kisses her on the cheek and walks out as NANCY and JEROME walk in and look around. NANCY picks up a unique looking perfume bottle and walks to the laptop counter. JEROME picks up a business card off the laptop counter.

JEROME

What's the ‘and more’?

ANNA

I do a form of counseling.

NANCY

Counseling?! Wait, you know Missy, don’t you? Are you that kind of counselor?

ANNA

I’m not quite as extreme as she is, and I do not treat people like she does.

JEROME

Would you be able to help me?

ANNA

I can certainly try. What kind of help?

JEROME

Can we discuss that at the session?

NANCY looks at him in surprise as she sniffs the bottle she's holding.

ANNA

Sure. When would you like to come in?

JEROME

When would you have an opening?

ANNA looks at her calendar book next to the laptop.

ANNA

Are you free around half two this afternoon? I can always close early.

JEROME

Sure. I’ll be here. Thank you.

NANCY

I’ll take this perfume. It smells wonderful.

ANNA

It’s orange blossom, patchouli, honey and olive oil. Used by Cleopatra.

NANCY

MMmmm…

ANNA

That’s ten pounds.

NANCY fishes out a ten pound note from her handbag and hands it to ANNA, who has written out the receipt, put it, the perfume and a business card in the bag.

ANNA

Thank you so much.

NANCY

Thank You.

JEROME

See you at half two.

NANCY takes her purchase as she and JEROME walk out the door. ANNA turns, starts the kettle, she walks over, gets a tea infuser of “herbal coffee” and fixes the tea cups. GEORGE stands to the side, then walks in after NANCY and JEROME walk out. NANCY attempts to give him a wide berth.

ANNA

Good morning, my love.

GEORGE smiles and shakes his head, walks over, wraps his arms around her waist and kisses her neck. She rubs her arms to calm the goosebumps.

GEORGE

That still amazes me. (beat) You mentioned the other day about a proper house. What would that look like to you?

ANNA turns around, looks at him questioningly and loops her arms around his neck.

ANNA

That's simple, stone and wood. Living room and kitchen with pass-through fireplace in the center. One or two bedrooms on either side, why?

GEORGE

No reason.

ANNA (purrs)

My love...what are you up to?

GEORGE tries to give an innocent look and changes the subject while she studies his face. ANNA takes a deep breath, she starts to let her guard down.

GEORGE

Do you have any sessions today?

ANNA

I have Jerome at half two and Riley at five, why?

GEORGE

Do you have time for me to show you something?

ANNA turns and resumes fixing the tea cups, she hands the herbal coffee to GEORGE, who takes a sip and looks at her.

GEORGE

Mmmm...I thought you didn’t do coffee.

ANNA

Do you like it?

GEORGE

It’s very good, but… it’s not coffee, is it?

ANNA (chuckles)

Dandelion, chicory and beetroot.

GEORGE takes another long drink.

GEORGE

Mmm…it’s good. Well?

ANNA

Sure, just let me put a note on the door.

ANNA walks to the laptop counter, writes a note on a large piece of paper, affixes a piece of tape to it, then walks over and affixes it to the window under the Closed sign. GEORGE follows her to the door with a smirk, finishing his drink on the way and sets the cup on the closest counter. ANNA opens the door, walks out, GEORGE walks out behind her and she locks the door with the key on her bracelet.

EXT - DAY - GEORGE’S PROPERTY

(CAMERA POV ON PROPERTY/ANNA/GEORGE)

ANNA and GEORGE are walking on the road, hand in hand, he stops her before they round the corner to the see the property.

GEORGE

I want this to be a surprise. Let me put this on you.

ANNA (chuckles softly)

Oh, alright.

He stops walking, takes a blindfold out of his pocket, puts it on ANNA to cover her eyes, then loops her arm through his, leads her to the land and over to the house site. The machinery is gone, just the cleared house and garden site remain.

GEORGE

Ok, stand there, eyes closed and I’ll take off the blindfold.

ANNA stands still, GEORGE takes off the blindfold, her eyes are still closed. GEORGE stands next to her and waits to see her expression.

GEORGE

Ok, open your eyes.

ANNA opens her eyes and looks around, then looks at him questioningly.

ANNA

Is this what I think it is?

GEORGE

It’s a house and garden site.

ANNA’s eyes open wide.

ANNA

Wait, what? For...us?

GEORGE

Yes, that’s why I asked what kind of house you wanted.

ANNA

Oh my…

ANNA walks over to the house site and steps inside the cleared area, looks at the perimeter of it, then looks at him in awe.

GEORGE

What do you think?

ANNA

I’m...in...shock.

GEORGE

Did you want to design the house?

ANNA

Well, I told you what I like, but what about you, what do you want in the house?

GEORGE walks over to her and rubs his hands on her upper arms, she loops her arms around his neck lovingly.

GEORGE

Just you.

ANNA

That’s a given, my love.

GEORGE smiles lovingly at her.

GEORGE

Whatever makes you happy.

ANNA

I want you to be happy too.

GEORGE

Oh I am, believe me, I've never been this happy before.

GEORGE puts his hands on either side of her face and passionately kisses her. ANNA puts her arms around him and he embraces her fully, as she is letting down her guard a bit more.

ANNA

When did you buy this?

GEORGE

Several days ago. There's five acres.

ANNA

You amaze me.

GEORGE

No, it is you who is amazing. Which way would you like the house to face?

ANNA

South facing, please. With one bedroom on the east side and one on the west?

GEORGE

The builder is looking for a sketch or a blueprint.

ANNA

I can draw it out, but I want your input as well.

GEORGE smiles, hugs her tightly and ANNA reciprocates.

INT - DAY - ANNA’S SHOPPE

(CAMERA POV FROM FRONT LEFT CORNER OF SHOPPE)

ANNA is drawing a house design on a piece of paper next to the laptop on the counter, GEORGE is standing next to her watching.

GEORGE

How long are the walls on the north and south?

ANNA (getting a little excited)

I’m thinking forty feet would be good. And the east and west sides could be thirty feet. Do you think that’s too big?

GEORGE (chuckles softly)

No, sounds fine to me, love.

JUSTIN walks in.

ANNA

Hi Justin.

JUSTIN

Hi, what’s going on?

GEORGE

Hello Justin, Anna’s designing our home.

JUSTIN

You what?

ANNA

George purchased some property and we’re designing our home.

JUSTIN

Awesome! Congratulations!

JUSTIN walks over and shakes GEORGE’s hand.

ANNA

Justin, ready to do some more errands for me?

JUSTIN

Give the word.

ANNA hands JUSTIN an envelope from the counter next to her, he opens it, looks at the money, takes out the list of items and reads it over.

ANNA

I have two sessions today, one at half two and one at five. The first one should be done by 4.

JUSTIN

You got it!

JUSTIN smiles and walks out the door, folding the envelope and putting it in his pocket. ANNA and GEORGE return to drawing the house.

ANNA

Do you need a den or office or something?

GEORGE

A den would be nice.

ANNA

With some shelves for your model aircraft?

GEORGE looks at ANNA questioningly as she sketches on the paper and he looks on.

GEORGE

How did you..?

ANNA

Saw a flash of some images of model aircraft during the last session, while we were connected.

GEORGE

Wow, I wasn’t even thinking about them.

ANNA

It was a subconscious thought, your mind trying to calm itself.

GEORGE simply looks at ANNA with intense curiosity.

INT - DAY - ANNA’S SHOPPE

(CAMERA POV FROM FRONT LEFT CORNER OF SHOPPE)

ANNA and GEORGE are still working on the house drawing when JEROME and NANCY walk in. ANNA spies them and GEORGE looks at the drawing.

ANNA

Ah, Jerome, is it that time already?

JEROME

I’m a few minutes early, that alright?

ANNA

That’s fine.

GEORGE

All set for me to take it to the contractor?

ANNA

Yes, I think it’s done.

GEORGE takes the drawing, kisses her on the cheek lovingly and heads towards the door slowly.

ANNA (to NANCY)

It’s best if the session is one-on-one though.

JEROME looks at NANCY who looks shocked.

NANCY

Really!?

ANNA

Yes, the sessions must be free of any stressors or distractions in order to truly work and help resolve any issues.

NANCY acts like a puppy that’s just had its nose smacked.

NANCY

Oh...ok. I’ll see you at home then?

JEROME

Ok.

GEORGE opens the door for NANCY who walks out, confused that she couldn’t stay.

GEORGE

It IS best. No worries, it’s all good. Jerome will be fine.

NANCY (snarkily)

You’re one to talk.

GEORGE

I am, because Anna has helped me. I was suffering from PTSD and deep depression. It will be difficult at best to make up for the way I behaved, but…

GEORGE closes the door behind him and NANCY.

ANNA

Give me a minute, let me get things set up, Jerome.

JEROME

Anything I can do to help?

ANNA

If you like, there are large pillows in the back room, bring out six of them please and put them in the corner.

JEROME goes into the backroom and walks out carrying the pillows. ANNA writes out a note, affixes tape to it, walks over and closes the door, locking it, closes the door shade and curtains, attaching the sign under the Closed sign.

INT - DAY - ANNA’S SHOPPE

(CAMERA POV FROM FRONT LEFT CORNER OF SHOPPE)

JEROME is sitting on the pillow across from ANNA, his eyes are closed. JEROME is relaxed, leaning against the wall, but his head is up.

ANNA

Now, Jerome, do you see the sink?

JEROME

Yes, I see it.

ANNA

Do you see the counter next to it?

JEROME

Yes.

ANNA

On that counter are three bottles, labeled hesitation, uncertainty and unconfidence.

JEROME

I see them.

ANNA

Reach out and touch them, feel the glass, the hardness of them.

JEROME moves his hand as if feeling the bottles on the counter.

JEROME

Wow.

ANNA

Now, you need to dispose of the contents of the bottles. The bottles do not have lids or caps. Pick up the first bottle. What does the label say on it?

JEROME

Hesitation.

ANNA

Tip the bottle and pour that hesitation down the drain.

JEROME moves his hand as if picking up the bottle, tipping it and pouring the contents down the drain.

ANNA

When that bottle is empty, put it back on the counter. It disappears.

JEROME finishes pouring, puts the bottle back on the counter and it disappears.

JEROME

Wow, it’s gone.

JEROME moves his hand as if reaching for the next bottle, taking hold of the next bottle.

JEROME

This one is labeled uncertainty.

ANNA

Alright. Dump that uncertainty right down the drain.

JEROME moves his hand as if pouring it down the drain, then setting it back on the counter.

JEROME

Alright, that one’s gone. The last one is unconfidence.

JEROME moves his hand as if taking hold of the next bottle and is pouring it down the drain, then setting it back on the counter.

ANNA

Now, as you put the last bottle on the counter, the bottle, sink and counter disappear. Taking all feelings of unconfidence, uncertainty and hesitation with it.

JEROME

Alright.

ANNA

Now, a mirror appears in front of you. Look at yourself in it and say, 'I am the man, the head of the family I have confidence, fortitude and determination'.

JEROME

I am the man, the head of the family. I have confidence, fortitude and determination.

ANNA

Say it again, enough times until you believe it.

JEROME

I am the man, the head of the family. I have confidence, fortitude and determination. I am the man, the head of the family. I have confidence, fortitude and determination.

ANNA

Now, take some deep breaths, follow my voice and come back.

JEROME takes some deep breaths and opens his eyes, looks around, straightens his posture and then looks at her.

ANNA

Take a drink of water, please. How do you feel?

JEROME

Like I’m King of the World. I feel I have a voice in what goes on in my own family now.

JEROME drinks the water.

ANNA

Good, now take your time getting up.

ANNA gets up, moves her pillow, takes care of the tea cups, water glasses and tissue box. JEROME slowly starts to get up. ANNA moves to his side to steady him if needed, but JEROME has no problem standing.

JEROME

Thank you. I feel much better. More like how I should be and have wanted to be feeling.

ANNA

I'm so glad.

JEROME

How much do I owe you?

ANNA

Nothing. Just enjoy your newfound confidence.

JEROME

Thank you!

ANNA walks with JEROME to the door, she opens it and he walks out smiling. She takes a deep breath, smiles to herself, she looks at the ring on her left hand.

ANNA

Yes, I think I’m definitely going to like it here.

INT-AFTERNOON-ANNA’S SHOPPE

(CAMERA POV BACK RIGHT CORNER OF SHOPPE)

JUSTIN walks in carrying a tote bag of the items ANNA had on the list.

ANNA

Oh, good, Justin you’re back.

JUSTIN

I had a little trouble finding the place, but eventually found it.

ANNA

Oh?

JUSTIN

Yes, they moved.

ANNA

Oh, am sorry.

JUSTIN

You’re alright, you didn’t know.

JUSTIN puts the bag on the back counter and takes out the purchased items.

JUSTIN

What are we making with these?

ANNA

Ginger candies.

JUSTIN

Mmm.

ANNA gets her recipe book, opens it to the bookmarked page, then gets a bowl containing the measuring cups, spoons and a strainer. She reads out the recipe and JUSTIN lines up the ingredients and utensils in the order she says. She gets out two saucepans and a shallow glass baking dish.

ANNA

Two cups pure water/One-quarter cup shredded fresh ginger root – packed. Three-quarter cup organic cane sugar/One-quarter cup pure honey. Justin, would you please spread some coconut oil on the bottom of the dish then cut a piece of parchment to fit in the bottom on top of the coconut oil then spread more coconut oil on top?

JUSTIN

Sure.

JUSTIN washes his hands, measures and cuts the parchment paper, takes a pair of gloves out of the box on the counter and sets to work on the coconut oil and parchment paper. ANNA reads off the rest of the recipe.

ANNA

Grate ginger root, pack it down into a One quarter cup measuring cup, and add to water in a saucepan and simmer until half the liquid has evaporated about thirty minutes.

ANNA follows as the directions say as she reads it.

ANNA

Strain ginger. Reserve one cup of ginger decoction. Pour ginger decoction in a large clean saucepan. Add in sugar and honey over high heat until it reaches two hundred sixty degrees or passes a water drop test which is the preferred method. Get a cup of very cold water and drop a small amount of syrup in. Use a spoon to retrieve the candy. When temperature is reached or syrup has passed a water test, pour candy into pan. Let sit for thirty minutes. Turn dish over and remove parchment paper from the bottom of the candy. Using a sharp knife run under hot water or coated in coconut oil, cut the candy into small strips one-half by one inch). Wrap in extra parchment paper for storage. Are shelf stable four to six weeks… longer if stored in the refrigerator.

JUSTIN

Sounds complicated.

ANNA

It's not, really. Just sounds like it.

ANNA sets to work over her two-burner cooktop.

INT - DAY- ANNA'S SHOPPE

(CAMERA POV BACK RIGHT CORNER OF SHOPPE)

JUSTIN is setting up the storage tin with parchment layers as ANNA is placing the ginger candies in it. RILEY walks in the door.

RILEY

Anna, you busy?

ANNA

Hi Riley, just finishing up some ginger candies.

RILEY

Oh, yum. I remember those!

ANNA

Thank you for your help, Justin. See you later?

JUSTIN

No worries, will do.

JUSTIN puts the last parchment layer in the tin, puts the lid on it, nods and heads out the door. ANNA follows him to the door, closing up shoppe. Curtains closed, sign turned to Closed. RILEY walks over, removes his shoes and his jacket and sits on the pillows in the corner. ANNA lights incense and candles and turns on soft soundscapes.

ANNA

What can I help you with, Riley?

RILEY

I need closure from Missy, amongst other things. I’m feeling…

ANNA

Sad? Depressed? Overlooked as far as your business ventures? Betrayed by Nancy and Betty?

RILEY

Yes. All of it. I’d forgotten how accurate you are, it’s truly a gift.

ANNA (smiles)

Most of the time.

ANNA picks up the box of tissues, walks over and sits on the pillow across from RILEY. RILEY, knowing how it works as he’s done it with ANNA before, closes his eyes and starts breathing deeply, relaxing from head to toe.

ANNA (softly)

Feel your whole body relaxing, starting with your toes, the relaxation tingles move up your legs to your torso, abdomen, chest, shoulders, arms, neck and head.

You can see RILEY relaxing as his body goes limp against the corner walls and his head drops onto his chest.

ANNA

Now, think back to the beginning of what you want to gain closure on. Is it the relationship with Missy?

RILEY raises his head with eyes still closed.

RILEY

Yes.

ANNA

How did Missy make you feel, was it heart-pounding or calming?

RILEY

Heart-pounding, an adrenaline rush, if I'm honest.

ANNA

Then you know in your heart, she wasn’t the right one, even though you both claimed to be soulmates.

RILEY

True, I’ve now seen what true soulmates look like in you and George.

ANNA

To be honest, the feelings I got when we all were together was more of a ‘friends with benefits’ than a true soul connection.

RILEY

Then why didn’t you say something?

ANNA

It was not my place, you know that, I would never do anything to disturb the energies of a relationship.

RILEY

Sure, but you could have pulled me aside.

ANNA

When? She was all over you. What was I to do, corner you in the loo?

RILEY (laughs softly)

No, I suppose not.

ANNA

Your true soul connection is still out there. Stop worrying, she will find you. I understand the needs of the flesh, but you cannot let it overrule you and that’s what I feel you did with Missy.

RILEY

Yes, I did, it was just so exciting and fresh.

ANNA

I know, it starts out that way, but that’s when you have to step back and go over the checklist for a true soul connection.

RILEY

True, I need to remember to do that, it’s hard though.

ANNA

I know it is, I fight it as well. And as for your feelings of betrayal from Betty and Nancy, you need to forgive them, not just to their faces, but in your heart.

RILEY takes a deep breath and nods.

ANNA

As for your feelings of being overlooked for your business ideas. You just didn’t have the right business partner or venue.

RILEY takes a long breath, opens his eyes and looks right into ANNA’s eyes.

RILEY

You’re absolutely right. I am so glad you decided to come to the village.

ANNA

As am I. How do you feel?

RILEY

Refreshed, much better.

ANNA

You know, we could share this shoppe if you wish.

RILEY

Really? I’ll have to see what I can come up with.

ANNA

That would be fun!

ANNA gets up and moves her pillow to the side. RILEY starts to stand up and ANNA lends him an arm, which he takes gratefully.

ANNA

Actually, if you wanted to take over making the lozenges and candies to sell to the Factory, I’d be happy to let you.

RILEY looks at her questioningly.

RILEY

Seriously?

ANNA

Yes. Think it over and let me know?

RILEY

I will definitely think it over, and research some recipes.

ANNA

You can always look through my recipe books.

RILEY

Thank you! I’ll consider it.

RILEY hugs ANNA tightly and heads towards the door.

RILEY

Thank you so much.

ANNA

My pleasure.

RILEY

Now to go forgive the girls.

ANNA

I know it’s hard, but they were just looking out for you. Chin up.

ANNA unlocks and opens the door and RILEY smiles at her as he walks out. ANNA speaks lovingly out the door.

ANNA

George, I’m done with Riley, you can come in now.

GEORGE walks around the corner and to the door, chuckling and shaking his head. ANNA steps back and GEORGE walks in, carrying a take-away bag.

GEORGE

Dinner?

ANNA

You’re too much.

ANNA closes the door behind him, locking it. GEORGE walks to the back counter, turns on the kettle and gets the food out of the bag.

ANNA

What are we having tonight?

GEORGE

How does cornish pasties sound?

ANNA

Delish.

GEORGE puts his arm around ANNA’S waist, pulling her to him as she tries to fix the teacups. She turns toward him, looks deep into his eyes as he looks into hers and kisses her deeply. He hugs her, she puts her head on his shoulder and sighs contentedly.
