6 Reasons Why The Internet is Obsessed with the Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber, Kylie Jenner Drama

My thoughts only

I've scrolled through Tik Tok incessantly over the past 4 or 5 days now. I've made content and commentary about this topic, some of which have surprisingly gone viral.

I'm seeing other creators jump on the bandwagon and getting their content shared on mainstream entertainment gossip channels, as well as being featured in YouTube gossip channels.

Some criticisms are starting to seep in, "Is this really worth everyone's attention?!" It's giving, "People are dying, Kim" -- like there are plenty of other real problems in the world right now.

But why does this drama resonate so much?

1) Mean Girls

Not only are we familiar with Mean Girl archetypes and the 2004 movie, but many people have gone through these same middle school/high school dramas themselves - either been victims of bullies or witnesses the bullying - and these behaviours trigger a sense of justice in the collective. We must fight for the underdog, we must call out bullying tactics when we see it. The more that the accused "Mean Girls" deny it, it is being taken as gaslighting. And there is more and more awareness of these psychological tactics. We're now in the post-pandemic post-Trump era, and everyone is sick of bullies.

2) Love Triangle

Selena, Justin, Hailey - just like Veronica, Archie and Betty. Like Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie. Like many other people's personal relationships. Drama with the ex's or the new partner. Why are we not putting more blame on the man in between?! (It's creeping, it's starting to seep into the collective consciousness...) Gradually, there is more content being made about Justin's responsibilities in this situation. But the girls are fighting, yet again, about a love triangle involving a man and two women.

And, in reality, it would appear that Selena Gomez herself has made it publicly clear that she is over Justin Bieber so this is just the fans energising this particular narrative. (Myself included, as a joke! I couldn't help myself. It's just such a romance novel classic!)

3) Narcissistic Behaviours

I'm not a psychologist, but there are many signs and symptoms being associated. The seemingly obsessive behaviours.

Whether there is any Truth to it, people are projecting, analysing, and it's turning into a true crime/fan imaginings of the worst possible scenarios that could be unravelling.

4) Celebrity

Celebrities and their celebrity friends. There are a lot of famous faces involved with this drama, which then also involves their followings and fandoms. (And their haters).

  • The Jenner Sisters, Kendall and Kylie.
  • Gigi and Bella Hadid.
  • Taylor Swift - and the Swifties were madddddd (myself included!) when Hailey Bieber did the tongue/vomit expression.
  • Justine Skye
  • Jordyn Woods, Pia Mia.

5) Classicism - Everyone Else vs Nepo Babies

It's the year of the Cost of Living Crisis. Everyone is struggling. Interest rates are skyrocketing. People are hurting. And to blame the rich getting richer, is somewhat cathartic.

People are rallying behind Selena Gomez, knowing that she wasn't born into a wealthy or famous family. She earned her fame. She showcased her talents. Triple threat - acting, singing, dancing. And now also a beauty mogul. People respect this over anyone else being successful from getting a leg up in the industry.

6) Morality

Selena Gomez stands for good morals and classy behaviour. She does not encourage her own followers to bully anyone. She urges her followers to take the high road. It's a class "Good vs Evil" storyline and most people are viewing Hailey Bieber (and the Jenner Sisters) as the villains in this story.

That's about all that I can think of for now. Despite all my comedic Tik Toks, these are my thoughts so far on this topic. What do you all think about it?

Ooof yes it is out of hand! And unavoidable! I do like how Selena seems to be always redirecting the drama though and trying to keep her own peace intact.

I have no idea what’s going on because I avoid celebrity gossip like the plague… I see it and scroll past it! But whatever is happening, I am Team Selena. My son absolutely loves Wizards of Waverly Place, even though it is before his time, and Selena was his first celebrity crush. I’m obsessed with Only Murders in the Building. I can’t think of a single thing those other two ladies have done that contributed to people’s happiness, so I’m not interested in whatever drama they got going on! I think you are right in your assessment about why others are fascinated by this, though.
