This year gave us the unexpected.

Across the board across the world, the verdict is unanimous – 2020 did NOT go according to anybody in this planet’s plan. Nobody could have predicted how the year turned out and till today I laugh at the fact that if somebody told 2019 me that this is how the year would go, I would have laughed them out of my apartment.

Still, as shocking as the year has been, there were specific events throughout the year that still caused jaws to drop, especially over here in Nigeria.

Below are Nigeria’s 10 Most Jaw-Dropping Moments of 2020.

10. Daddy Freeze vs Pastor Ibiyeomie

Arguably one of the most shocking moments of 2020 came when video footage came out of renowned Pastor, Pastor Ibiyeomie hauling some very strong words at OAP Daddy Freeze who had in the past countered teachings made by another Nigerian pastor, Pastor Bishop Oyedepo – a man Pastor Ibiyeomie takes as his spiritual father.

In the now infamous tape Pastor Ibiyeomie called Daddy Freeze a “bastard” as well as hauled countless more insults about his parents, profession, and more at him.

A pastor calling an OAP a “bastard” right on the church pulpit – now that’s a definite jaw dropper anywhere in the world!

9. Tems and Omah Lay Arrest

On December 13th, shocking news hit the internet that Nigerian musicians Tems and Omah Lay had been arrested in Uganda following their performance at a concert which the Ugandan government claimed flouted the COVID-19 guidelines of the country.

This whole ordeal lasted for a couple of days and social media was abuzz throughout all of it. Tems went on a hunger strike, Omah Lay tweeted out about how something bigger must have been at play, Nigerian celebrities came tweeting, the hashtags didn’t stop. This was definitely a big jaw-dropper this year.

8. Tunde Ednut Instagram Shutdown

Another story that caused jaws to drop all over Nigeria was the news that one of Nigeria’s leading Instagram bloggers, Tunde Ednut, had gotten his account shutdown. Prior to his Instagram being shutdown, Tunde had garnered over 2 million followers and posted multiple times every single day.

His fans and Nigerians everywhere were very surprised to wake up and see that the infamous blogger’s Instagram page was no longer anywhere to be found and had been closed by Instagram following numerous account reports.

7. The Palliatives

At the beginning of the lockdowns in Nigeria, Nigerians were promised relief in the form of palliatives. Funds were reportedly released for said palliatives but these palliatives never seemed to show up. That was until sometime around October people started finding all of a sudden, several warehouses all around the country where bags and bags of these palliatives meant for the people were being stored. As you can imagine, this turned into a mass ‘looting’ and Nigerians came to “possess their possessions” invading the warehouses with palliatives and collecting what was rightfully theirs.

6. Desmond Elliot House of Assembly Speech

A very big disappointing moment for Nigerians everywhere came in October of 2020 when renowned Nigerian actor, Desmond Elliott, took the mic at the House of Assembly during a time when Nigerians were already so hurt and angry about the injustice and bad governance in the country to talk about – the negative impact of social media.

Speaking to the house, he complained about how the youths were commenting on social media saying that in the next five years, Nigeria would be gone if the house didn’t begin to address the comments section on social media.

As you can imagine, this caused not only a jaw drop but a whole lot of heads shaking in disappointment all over the country. Civilians and celebrities alike took to social media to lambast the actor for his sentiment and he has since apologized for it.

5. Erica’s GoFundMe Account

Who didn’t have something to say when a GoFundMe page was opened for BBNaija contestant Erica after her exit from the show. Around the country, Nigerians lambasted Erica, donaters to Erica and the Big Brother Naija show for misplaced priorities. People were so mad that the BBNaija contestant was able to raise over $69,000 from GoFundMe when there are Nigerians struggling and starving on the street. Everything about this incident definitely caused jaws to drop.

4. Buhari Speech

Following the incidents at the Lekki Toll Gate, Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari took to the microphone to address the nation which at the time was seriously bleeding, only to give what is surely going to go down in history as one of the worst presidential speeches ever given at a time of crisis.

In fact, the speech was so bad, people didn’t believe they had watched the complete speech. The internet lit up following the president’s speech and the only phrase that can perfectly sum up the general feeling across the nation was: E shock us!

3. Erica Disqualification

By far one of the most shocking moments of 2020 came when one of the most beloved housemates in the Big Brother Lockdown house, Erica Nlewedim was shockingly disqualified from the show following a night of tirade, mayhem, and insults most likely caused by alcohol and a lot of pent up frustration.

Fans of the Big Brother housemate were heartbroken on the day of the disqualification, so much so that they opened up a GoFundMe which…well, see above.

2. Lekki Massacre

By faaaaaar, the biggest jawdrop, shock, evil, catastrophe – there still aren’t enough words to describe what happened at the Lekki Toll Gate on the 20th of October, 2020 when members of the Nigerian Army opened fire on peaceful END SARS protesters who were out on the street protesting against police injustice, police brutality, and bad governance.

It is still one of the worst days in Nigerian history and till today, watching clips from DJ Switch’s Instagram live still breaks my heart till today.

It was such a dark day and is by far the biggest Nigerian jawdrop of the year, beaten only by…

1. COVID-19

Nationally, globally, the coronavirus outbreak has come as the biggest shocker, the biggest jawdropping moment, the biggest unexpected plot twist nobody could have seen coming moment of 2020.

COVID-19 literally reshaped the way the world works, looks, and functions. Many people went out of jobs; restaurants, bars, cinemas, etc. were closed for majority of the year. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a worldwide catastrophe that hit Nigeria just as hard as it has hit any other part of the world and for that reason, it takes the #1 spot as the most jaw-dropping moment of 2020.

That’s All.
