Touched By The Flames Of War
How Evil Is Born
Prologue
It was almost dark, and to Anisa it was
like walking through some kind of nightmare.
As she approached the house, it looked like a
tomb that would spit out some kind of
monster that would eat her. She was petrified
of dark places.
“Edgar, I don’t want to go in there it’s
creepy in there.” She felt like bugs were
crawling all over her skin.
“You’ll be fine stop whining, nobody
even lives here.” His voice was stern and cold.
“Are you sure?” Anisa asked.
“Yes, I’m sure you’ll be fine, now go in
there and get the bag we came to get.”
“But I don’t want to! I’m scared!”
“You’ll go in there and get that bag, or
I’ll lock you in the tool shed again.”
“No! I’ll do it, I don’t want to go back in
the tool shed.”
Moving in toward the dilapidated house,
and creeping up to the door, she peeked in
from the side but didn’t see anyone-no
monsters, breathing a sigh of relief she
continued inside.
She was only in the house for a minute
or two when she found the bag that her
brother had come for. It was small, the size of
a man’s fist, and it had been tucked under a
small thin mattress that lay on the ground.
Looking around, there wasn’t much here, just
a cold campfire and duffle bag with some pots
and dried fruit.
When she picked it up, there was a
clank. Looking in the bag she found there
were gems inside it, and They were beautiful,
one of them looked like a star that had fallen
from the heavens. It was glowing the brightest
blue she had ever seen. It reminded her of
Thar’con’s sun. In school the teacher called it
a blue giant. Sometimes she wished she was
living among the stars.
When she ‘came out of the house,’ her
brother was on the ground, unconscious-but
no one else was around. His head was
bleeding and there was a broken branch lying
next to him with blood on it. She frantically
shook him trying to wake him up.
Then a twig snapped ‘behind-her,’ she
turned to see standing there an old pale
skinned human woman lunging at her. The
fear welled up inside her-she closed her eyes
and put up her hands, thinking that she was
about to die. Something strange happened,
she felt this surge of energy. Her arms started
to feel warm. Then lightning spewed from her
hands.
The old woman was already so close
that the lightning hit her across the left side,
tearing through her like a knife through
butter. She screamed in pain and stumbling
forward, tripped over Edgar who was starting
to wake up. Shook his head, still foggy, and
hurting like it had been put in a vice.
“What happened?” He asked.
“You were hurt, and she was trying to
get me too.”
“Stay put, I’m going to see if she is still
alive.”
When he checked, she was alive but
barely. He decided to tell his sister that she
was dead. It might come in handy later, when
he needed her to do something else.
“Looks like you killed the old hag.”
“What?! No but I didn’t mean to! I was
just scared! I didn’t even want to come here.”
“Did you get the bag?”
She hung her head. Yelling at her now
he grabs her arms hard. “Did you get the
bag!?”
“Yes, I found it.” She began to cry as
she handed it to him.
“Good, it’s all here. Take this and put it
in my room, under my bed. I’ll get rid of the
body. Just forget everything.”
He had always had his suspicions about
his sister being one of those powered people
but now he knew it for sure. He didn’t have
powers himself. His father hated powered
people-he’s not sure why but if he had to
guess, he didn’t need one. Their father was
nice in public, but at home he’s a Bastard.
Edgar waited until Anisa was out of
sight, then he grabbed the woman by her
ankles and dragged her into the house. She
started to moan and cry asking why they were
doing this.
“Because you had something I wanted,”
he said.
“My gems!” she said.
“Yes, your gems. And it seems that you
also have powers, because I’m sure that you
appeared out of nowhere.”
She opens one eye now, but only
slightly. He pulls out his dagger, bends down,
and slowly pushes it into her gut she tries to
scream, but he puts his hand over her mouth
and holds it shut. Then he takes the dagger,
pushes it in deeper, and runs it from her gut
all the way up to her chest.
As the life drains from her there is a
quick secession of flashes in her eyes-then
nothing. He wasn’t supposed to kill the old
lady, but she shouldn’t have hit him. Now he
had to get to work hiding the body before
anyone else could find it. It took an hour to
get all the blood covered over and to bury the
body where animals can’t get to it.
