Halloween is a big deal in my town. Every house goes all out in a competition to see who can freak out the most kids. Luckily for us, they also compete to see who can give out the best candy. It’s pretty great. And this year, my friends and I were finally old enough to go trick or treating alone.

Since I was a child, I have heard the old man say that sleepwalking is very scary. Sleepwalkers will do some horrible and strange things, for example, go to the cemetery in the middle of the night to dig up human bones, bring them home and hide them under the bed, then go to bed and go back to sleep, and wake up the next day without knowing anything.

I am a police officer. Once, I went to a small town in the middle of nowhere to work on a case, and when things were done, it was already dark. And in this remote town, traffic is also closed, and once dark, there is no car out, I had to find a hostel in the town to stay for the night.

In the nineties, residents' meetings were held periodically in our cooperative house. Let me explain: a cooperative is a community in which all issues of placement and contacts with external organizations are resolved at a general meeting. It's like a communal apartment the size of a residential building. Residents talked about home improvement, made up schedules of subbotniks, exchanged numbers of familiar locksmiths and electricians. I was ten years old at the time. Sometimes my mother took me with her to such meetings. It should be noted that we moved into this house a few months ago and hardly knew anyone.

Perhaps it was the sudden temperature drop from the previous days or the clear night sky allowing the moon to shine brightly across the city, but Detective Finely knew she would be approaching something sinister that night. Driving through the bright and busy streets of downtown she began to notice less and less vehicles as she entered the darker side of town where the lights were dim and everyone asleep. The only light that shined bright was the flashing of red and blue lights. She gulped as her vehicle approached the scene, noticing not a single officer moving. They were all surrounding something in the entrance of an alleyway, between two apartment buildings. A few people had their heads hanging out their window, others were out on their fire escapes, just to see what was going on.

Jason was running down a hallway, he fell to the ground and looked around frantically. His only light being that of the blinking red emergency light. Thinking he was safe, Jason slowly got to his feet. Nothing to his left. Nothing to his right. Nothing where he came from. Just him and the blinking red light. Still looking around, he reached behind himself. Reaching for the emergency exit that would lead to the alley. The emergency exit suddenly had the silhouette of a rabbit costume outside of the window. Watching. Jason.

I’ve been keen on Stephen King ever since I picked up and read a collection of horror stories years ago: a thick hardback with the title Four Past Midnight to reflect the darkest stretches of the night hours.
