In Loving Memory
“Where are you?” I was growing more frantic with every passing minute. The sun was getting closer to the horizon and this wasn’t somewhere I wanted to be alone at night…

I had moved into my dream home the previous week and was in the process of getting settled. The home, built in the 1920s, looked like a combination of a Thomas Kinkade cottage and a Hobbit hole. It was warm, cozy and had amazing touches (coved ceilings, beautiful woodwork everywhere, leaded glass windows) and was set on a generous lot overlooking the forest. My favorite room, the reason I jumped on the house, was the living room with its built in bookshelves, window seat overlooking the kitchen garden and, the best part, the stout wood burning fireplace surrounded by a hearth of tumbled river stones capped with a thick oak mantle. The room has a certain magic that made it seem like time stood still and the only priorities you had were reading, napping and staring at the fire.

TOME 11 We stood, daunted at the edge of town, having expected more dilapidation of the population. I found myself heaving in each breath, unsure how to mask my climbing anxiety. I choose to instead stare at Alex, open mouth as if to speak, yet only gasps protrude into the air. He looks over, concern filling the space between us as we realize I am having an asthma attack.

The early morning mountain air was cool against my skin as I cut through the trees lining the path. The trail was still covered with a light dew from the night before, but my well-worn hiking boots made easy work of the rough terrain. Growing up in the town at the foot of these mountains, I was basically raised on these trails. In the beginning, I loved the feeling of adventure that coursed through me every time I spent hours exploring. The feeling of being in the wilderness, untouched by humans always filled me with wander. But as the years passed, and visitors became more frequent, I longed for a new challenge. As the saying goes, you can find anything on the internet. So, after some searching, I found a local online group that created geocaching challenges in my mountains. At first, I was disappointed by how easy the posted challenges were. The geocaches were always located somewhere by the most popular trails. However, a subgroup formed of those who were wanting to take it to the next level. We would try to outdo each other in finding harder locations to hide the geocache, going further and further into the wilderness. One of the members, “MountainMan82,” and I quickly became fierce competitors, always trying to be the first to complete the latest challenge. This competition soon developed into a sense of kindred spirits and we shifted our focus into challenging each other.

You'd never suspect such a union between their kinds, a bloodsucker, and an otherworlder. She didn't intend to fall for him, it was something that just happened. It had been her first time among mortals and she had no intentions of returning home after their meeting.

The Balzac is a small coffee shop, discreet, secret almost, stuck between an old bookstore and a shoe shop. There, writers, poets and other artists congregate to discuss, work and exchange in a smoky atmosphere.

Since I moved to the rugged Northern California coastal mountains, I haven't found myself regretting it. The area has access to all the natural neccesities of life: food, water, shelter, creative stimuli, clean air. With the right skills, one would never have to leave the mountain. The forest truly is a giving entity.
Little Black Book
Would you risk your life for an opportunity to win a million dollars? All I know is I would do whatever it takes for that kind of cash. Some friends and I heard a rumor of one million dollars in the form of gold in an old, haunted, and deserted house near the railroad tracks. Well, you know what they say, no one has ever made it back from that side of the tracks.

My instinctual feels all wrong and foreboding thoughts of ill repute is my new now. That Little Black Book and everything it stands for…. And now I am only left with my hopeless soulless self and I ask away like a machine gun stuck on it’s firing pin, sending a spray of bulllets into all life forces and the like PEW PEW PW PE PWE PEW!!!!

The fact was, she knew she was going to die. Brianna tried in vain to slow her breathing as her chest felt like exploding from the pounding of her heart. She needed to be still, every movement and sound made was a step closer to her demise. Brianna could hear the footsteps in the distance, the crunch of the snow beneath their boots giving them away. She had to use this to her advantage, get away before they eventually found her hiding spot. The cloudy night worked to her advantage; the forest acting like a darkened maze of trees. She looked down and took a quick inventory of what she had. Not much. A dried piece of beef and a small knife, not much to defend herself; especially if they were bigger than her. Not even enough food to last if she climbed a tree and tried to wait them out. They would catch her. She had to think fast, where could she retreat? Eyes squeezed shut, her mind a swirling maze of images from the past week, she struggled to think clearly. The howling wind and the swish of the trees only added to her misery. The cave. That was it, she smiled and had to catch herself from shouting with glee. No-one knew about the spot she had found when she was a child, she only hoped it had survived the past ten winters.

Daniel Polchuli stood at the entrance of the construction site and gazed upon the horrors he saw. The gallons of blood soaked the dirt. The men he sent to get rid of Greg Duhan’s body were a little bit everywhere. Daniel almost felt what could be considered guilt, he sent them there. Granted he did it to save face. The police of Evergreen City belonged to his family. Hell, the entire city belonged to his family. Both the cops and the Polchuli’s couldn’t let people know what happened to Duhan, he was the glue that held these two noble forces together. The Press would see his mutilated body, they would mention how a beloved detective was brutally slain, it would make smart people think there was a competitor for the city, and it make the blind people not leave their homes, and that means not spending money at businesses that the Polchuli’s had their hands in.
