I truly amaze myself sometimes. I still think I did the right choice by entering the writing contest, I mean after all, who randomly comes across an envelope full of money and a little black book... I know, it sounds totally impossible and stupid; exactly my first thought when it happened.
It all started when I stopped by to get my daily cappuccino. I could feel someone starring at me so I turned around but nobody seemed to be looking at me. Everyone was looking at their phones while waiting for their order. While I was waiting for someone to take my order, the feeling of being starred at got stronger and stronger. I turned around again and nobody was starring at me. I started to feel uneasy so I didn’t even bother to order and left.
As soon as I opened the door, I took off my mask, put it in its bag and disinfected my hands. I made my way to the waterfront and enjoyed my walk as always. When I arrived to my favourite bench, it wasn’t available. Nobody was sitting on it but it was covered with newspapers and garbage, it looked as if someone had spent the night there.
I started laughing because what else could I do? Now not only I didn’t have my cappuccino; I didn’t have my favourite bench to sit down... It was colder than usual and the idea of sitting somewhere else, was not very appealing. I used my feet to get everything off the bench and I sat down. I enjoyed starring at the gorgeous scenery for a couple of hours, as I stood up; I accidentally dropped off my mask! I hesitated to pick it up even it was inside a bag because of my OCD. Ugh...
I decided to pick it up, after all it was my favourite mask and I could just wash it. As I grabbed it, I saw a bank envelope under it. I don’t know what got into me but without hesitation, I picked it up. It wasn’t sealed... When I opened it, it was full of $100 bills. I literally froze and I got shocked! It took me a few deep breaths to get a grip of what was happening. I was disgusted because my hands were so contaminated, I decided not to even think about it. Nobody was around, as my favourite bench is a hidden gem.
I counted the money and it was $20,000! Two hundred bills of $100.
I was psyched about it and after disinfecting my hands, I started walking home. I passed by a garbage can and threw my mask away, I decided to just order a new one with my fresh fortune. I saw my bank and wanted to deposit the cash but then I realized I no longer had a mask and I couldn’t go in! So I just went home.
When I got home, I put the cash inside the pocket of my coat. I took a shower and was extremely excited about the cash. I never really thought about whose money was it, I mean everyone living waterfront is loaded. I assumed someone accidentally dropped the envelope when they were leaving the bench.
I spent the rest of my day thinking how lucky I was and even went to bed pretty early, I wanted to go to the bank and deposit the cash first thing in the morning.
After depositing the cash I went to get my cappuccino as usual. No funny business this time... As I was leaving the coffee shop, someone’s hand gently tapped into my shoulder. As I turned around, a man handed me a little black book, “You dropped it”. I was paralyzed as he was wearing the mask I had thrown away yesterday; it was my favourite mask and I was sure of it! Not only it was a personalized mask engraved with my initials, I had marked it on the right side.
I was not able to even talk and without thinking, I just grabbed the little black book and left in a rush. I was sweating and the worst thoughts came to my mind! I didn’t feel safe going to my bench so I just went back home. As soon as I got inside, I opened the little black book and to my surprise it was blank, nothing written in it.
I was trying to understand what was happening, not even a moment after and the buzzer rang. I didn’t answer and insisted I left quickly through the back door of the building. I immediately went to the bank and took out the $20,000. I regretted taking the money and I went and placed it exactly where I found it. I was just hoping it wasn’t too late. Too late for what? I didn’t even mention the incident to anyone.
When I got home, I could sense someone’s presence. I went in carefully but no one was there. I grabbed my coat as I had put the little black book inside a pocket and I wanted to toss it. Well, it was gone and instead my mask was there! I felt so sick to my stomach that I threw up.
I thought I had fainted... But when I woke up I was on my bed, wearing my pajamas. I felt really dizzy and tired and was still thinking about everything that had happened. I got a gut feeling to check my bank account so I did. I couldn’t believe my eyes! No record of the cash deposit nor of the cappuccino. The last transaction showing was from apparently a few days ago. There is no way this could have been just a dream, no way.
But it there’s no record of the recent incidents, it must had been... I guess...
I remembered there was a writing contest due today and I decided to base my story for the writing contest on my “dream”... After all, it involves cash and a little black book...
This definitely is one of my favourite entrees for my daily weird dreams journal.
