Here we go again! Here’s this week’s celebrity news roundup:
• Naomi Osaka Wins Australian Open Championship
Congratulations are in order for tennis champ Naomi Osaka who won the 2021 Australian Open Women’s Title this week.
Osaka beat Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-3 in the finals. This is Osaka’s fourth grand slam title.
Way to go!
• Emma Watson Not Retiring
Actress Emma Watson’s manager, Jason Weinberg, has confirmed that she’s not retiring. The confirmation comes in the heels of rumours this week that Watson was stepping away from acting to focus on her relationship with her rumoured fiancé Leo Robinton, who she’s been pictured out and about with.
According to news report this week, she was content to live in Ibiza and had stopped updating her social media, while her PR people were quoted to have said she wasn’t taking on any new commitments.
However, her manager waded in to clear up the rumours, telling Entertainment Weekly in a statement that the rumours were false and “Emma’s social media accounts are dormant, but her career isn’t”.
• Tiger Woods Injured in Car Accident
This week, Tiger Woods was unfortunately involved in a serious single-car accident. He was alone in the car at the time of the accident. His agent, Mark Steinberg, informed that he had suffered several leg injuries as a result but was in surgery.
The golf pro had been in California for a two-day event where he was shooting with GolfTV/Golf Digest after hosting PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational. He was said to have been driving a tournament car when the accident occurred.
Woods is said to be stable and has had his foot and ankle stabilised with screws and pins. It has also been reported that he will not be criminally charged as there was no evidence he had been drunk driving, however the AFP reported that he could face an infraction charge for speeding or not being observant.
We wish him a speedy recovery.
• Tina Turner Documentary and Nomination for Hall of Fame
Singer Tina Turner’s documentary is due to be released sometime this year by HBO. HBO released a trailer for the documentary this week, starring interviews with Turner herself, as well as her husband Erwin Bach, Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, etc. The documentary will also feature never before seen video, audio and pictorial materials.
Apart from this, the music legend was also nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She urged her followers, in an Instagram post, to vote for her, saying in part “It’s an honour to be nominated… alongside such illustrious company”.
• Daft Punk Have Retired
After 28 years, the French Duo Daft Punk, real names Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, have called it quits. They announced their retirement in an almost 8 minutes long video titled Epilogue.
In the video both artists are walking for minutes in a desert. One of them slows down and eventually stops. He then has a timer set off in his back which turns out to be an explosive and blows him up. The other watches as his friend blows up and walks away into the distance.
• Celebrity Baby News
In celebrity baby news this week, the British Singer Ellie Goulding announces that she’s pregnant via a photoshoot with Vogue. Goulding married her husband Caspar Joppling in 2019, and this will be their first child.
Also, in baby news, Mandy Moore and her husband Taylor Goldsmith announced that they had welcomed their first child, son August Harrison, this week. Moore announced in an Instagram page that the baby had arrived “right on his due date, much to the delight of his parents”.
Another couple who welcomed their first child this week were Kansas City Chief’s Quarter Back Patrick Mahomes and his fiancée Brittany Matthews. They named their daughter Sterling Skye.
Finally, in more baby news, Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and her husband Mr Jack Brooksbank have announced that their first child has been named August Philip Hawke. The announcement was made in an Instagram post from the royal family.
