Dina will soon say goodbye

Soaps She Knows says that on Friday June 5, The Young and the Restless will air a heartwarming classic episode featuring Dina Mergeron. If you already saw this episode from December 24, 2019 you might want to watch it again. If you missed it please tune in because this might just be her swan song, literally. As viewers know, Dina is dying from Alzheimer's disease so there will be no miracle cure. On the few occasions she has been seen in General City this past year, she is usually silent and unaware. On Christmas Eve, however, the Abbott family witnessed a miracle, that many viewers said brought them to tears.

The Abbotts are gathered together at the family mansion for the holiday and seated in the living room. Traci stands up and begins singing "O Come All Ye Faithful". Jack, Ashley, and Abby join in as Dina who is seated on the couch watches, seemingly in her own world. As Traci sings the verse that begins "Sing choirs of angels, sing in exultation, " the scene cuts to Billy alone at a restaurant drinking a beer, and then to Lauren and Michael who are celebrating the holiday with their son Fen. When the Abbott's are shown again, Dina jumps up as Traci is coming to the end of the verse. Madame Mergeron joins in singing "Glory to God, all Glory in the highest."

Dina during a melt down.

The family is elated and beaming with joy to see their mother and grandmother alert and aware of what is going on. As the song comes to an end, Dina raises her hands and waves them like a music conductor as she very loudly with mouth open wide sings "Oh come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord." Everyone says "Merry Christmas" and reach out to praise their mother for this miracle. Since that time, however, Dina has rarely been seen and when she was, she was sadly back in her shell. This is why it is important that fans of Marla Adams view this episode because there probably will not be another where Dina expresses mental clarity.

In addition to the fact that her character is in the last stages of Alzheimer's disease there is the issue with the pandemic. Soap Dirt ha revealed that the unions may not allow actors over age 65 to return to work when The Young and the Restless begins taping again. This would affect Marla Adams. Eric Braeden, and also Peter Bergman. Recently Braeden announced that he was ready, willing, and able to take the chance coming back to the set, but he and the others may not be allowed. People over age 65 are said to be at the highest risk of being diagnosed with coronavirus and the unions want to protect the actors on daytime television.

Dina and Nikki

Soap Dirt has promised updates as they become available fans need to brace themselves for several changes. Both Jack and Victor have been off screen at various times, but this situation could keep them from being seen again until 2021. CBS ha announced that The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless might begin taping again in mid June. It would be about 6 weeks from this time before the new episodes would air, which would be August. Hopefully things would be straightened out for the veteran actors before long but depending on when they return it could be next year before their scenes are shown. This would delay Dina's death, but fans will miss her, as well as Jack and Victor if they are not shown for such a long time.

Although her character has a deadly disease, there have been some fun moments with Dina. One was when she stole silverware from a restaurant, then stabbed Nikki with a fork because she was harassing her. Marla Adams has truly done excellent work in this role and fans are sorry it has to come to an end. Stay tuned for updates as to when The Young and the Restless comes back from the hiatus. Be looking for breaking news and spoiler alerts to reveal to when the first new episodes will appear on CBS and whether or not the older actors will be allowed to work. Enjoy the accompanying video clip, but please tune in Friday to see the entire holiday episode. With the way things are going right now, I believe everyone could use a little Christmas right now. Kudo's to Beth Maitland who as Traci same so beautifully, Her voice is definitely worth listening to again. Dina singing wit her children should warm even the coldest heart.
