Toon in with me

Binge watching cartoons is truly a guilty pleasure.

I invite the readers to toon in with me and find out about something that is near and dear to my heart. One of my guilty pleasures is binge-watching the cartoons that I grew up with. Boomerang and MeTV both recently added classic animation to their lineup. This is a testament to how many people still enjoy those old favorites. I curl up in the bed or in the living room on the couch with snacks and I’m good to go. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and Marvin the Martian are among my favorites. I am enjoying Tom and Jerry Droopy Dog and Popeye as well.

I watched a marathon on New Year’s weekend and now enjoy my favorites seven days a week. I can find the classics I grew up with practically any time of the day or night. I also tape episodes so that I can have my own personal marathons. I still laugh till I cry when Elmer Fudd says “ Be very very quiet I’m hunting wabbits.” I am over the moon with glee when I hear Bugs Bunny’s classic “ What’s up doc”. Just recently I felt like a kid at Christmas when Marvin the Martian wailed, “ The illumium Q 36 space modulator. That creature has stolen the space modulator.”

I adore Droopy saying “ Hello all you happy people” and when the Road Runner sneaks up on the Coyote and goes “ Berp Beep.” They say baby boomers are the generation that never grew up and I’m proud to say that describes me to a T. We boomers are now between the ages of 56 and 72. We are grandparents and great grandparents but many of us still love our animated programs. Cartoons are an acquired taste for some adults and preferred to other types of entertainment. Millions of children grew up with the animation of Chuck Jones and the numerous characters voiced by the iconic Mel Blanc.

Sure we became teenagers and put away childish things but when we became parents we began watching again with our own children. Sadly by the time our grandchildren came along, the classics were being replaced with a lot of new cartoons as well as anime. Now, however, as the old saying goes, "Everything old is new again" and MeTV reports that viewers have practically been begging for old school cartoons. Now that I am a menopausal woman, I have nights where I cannot sleep. I will binge on the cartoons that are airing or watch some of those I have taped until I fall asleep.

Wiley Coyote and Road Runner

Cartoons have become my go to method in f relieving stress. During the pandemic shut downs, I laughed tilll I cried watching old favorites. Looney Tunes were also a way of esacapism from the daily drama of Donald Trump. I could toon in to animated classics and tune out the garage of stress inducing news reports on what the president was doing. When my grandchildren come over we binge for 3 or 4 hours on our favorite shows. Everyone gets a turn at picking what we will watch. This causes me to recall the mid 90’s when a relative gave my children a 6 hour VHS tape of classic old school cartooms.

When my husband worked nights and our oldest son was away at college, my 2 younger children and myself had a ball. We put that tape in the TV and let it run for the entire 6 hours and sometimes we fell asleep with it running. Binge watching is in our blood and over the years I made numerous 6 hour tapes of favorite cartoons that my children and I enjoyed together. Today as I write this we finally had our first big snow of the season. I will be curled up in bed enjoying the looney tunes gang. I invite you dear reader to find some classic animation that you enjoy and toon in with me.
