Beware of sensationalism in journalism

Soap Dirt is calling out TMZ for not getting the facts straight regarding two stories that were reported last week. While the news outlet has brought forth accurate breaking news, they often mislead their followers by posting inaccurate information. This is what recently took place in regard to the NBC daytime drama Days of Our Lives and a former actor on the program. TMZ announced that the entire cast of Days of Our Lives had been laid off and implied the show might be cancelled. The truth of the matter is that Days had been on a schedule where they filmed for eight months straight, unlike other soaps that air their material about two months after taping. The DOOL executives decided to go the route of other shows as a cost saving measure. The cast had already taped enough episodes to last through March of 2020 so everyone is on a temporary hiatus until time to sign new contracts next spring.

Rumors flew a few years back that Days of Our Lives contract would not be renewed. This came on the heels of two ABC soaps, One Life to Live and All my Children being cancelled. At the time is was said that production costs for the NBC daytime drama were too expensive. The television viewing audience for soap opera's has been decreasing since the 1990's for various reasons. Although several cast members have assured the fans that the show will most likely be renewed, anything is possible. Even so, TMZ sensationalized the story and reported the possible cancellation as though it were a done deal. Within 24 hours of this misinformation about DOOL the news outlet was doing the same thing with a former cast member of the show.

TMZ broke the news that soap veteran Tyler Christopher had been arrested for being drunk in public. It was reported that he had too much to drink during a birthday celebration, Nancy Lee Grahn who was Tyler's cast mate on General Hospital quickly set the record straight. She said that the actor was dealing with a disease that would kill him if he did not get the proper treatment. Soap Dirt indicates that Christopher has had a long battle with sobriety and suggests that his drinking is why he was let go from his DOOL role as Stefan Dimera. The actor is best known for originating the role of Nikolas Cassadine on General Hospital.

Those who watch General Hospital had been hoping for close to three years that Tyler Christopher would come back to the show, but when Nikolas returned on October 31 he was recast with Marcus Columba. Soap fans understand that the characters they watch every day are human and have issues just like anyone else. Still, it is difficult when those who portray strong characters have their weaknesses exposed in public. Soap Dirt ran a photo of Tyler Christopher's mug shot and mentioned trouble in his marriage. All of this is unfortunate and can possibly have an affect on the actor's future endeavors. Fans and former cast mates are hoping the award winning actor will be able to obtain the treatment he needs to live a sober productive life.

Days of our Lives devotees can find some relief in the fact that TMZ did not report accurately regarding the NBC daytime drama. The cast members are supposed to sign new contracts in 2020 and the show should go on without a hitch. When it comes to news reports in this day and time, caution is a must. The source should be investigated their over all reputation taken into consideration. TMZ was founded on November 8, 2005 as a tabloid website. The initials, T-M-Z stand for thirty-mile zone, which is the historic "studio zone" located within a 30-mile radius and is centered at the intersection of North La Cienega and West Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, California.

Sometimes TMZ is spot on, but on other occasions they have been accused of fake news or sensationalism. In this internet age, whenever there is breaking news, it is a good rule of thumb to check out reliable sources you know have a stellar reputation and see what they have to say on the matter. TMZ breaks the latest news with celebrities and the world of entertainment but at times they don't always fact check before they print so keep this in mind.
