The Wonderful World Of Bowdlerized Films: 10 Of The Most Bizarrely Censored Movie Lines Ever

Movies today are pretty much shown to anyone despite their BBFC ratings. Lots of parents will watch a film with their kids despite the content of the movie, regardless of whether or not it contains cursing or nudity.

This article purely focuses on the amount of cursing in movies and the way it is censored, which can be QUITE bizarre! Many films like Pulp Fiction and Dumb and Dumber have in appropriate words which are often times censored out. The way it's done is simply amazing. As we'll see, curse words are replaced with other random words that seem to fit the sentence incredibly well (sometimes). Let's take a look at some of the strangest examples, shall we?

1. 'Pulp Fiction' (1994)

The Original Line Read: “My eyes are wide fucking open.”

The Edited Line Read: "My eyes are wide focused open.”

This Samuel L. Jackson line is just one of the few that have a random word put in place to remove the curse word. It totally changes the setting of the scene!

2. 'Dumb and Dumber' (1994)

The Original Line Read: "Right on my ass, after you kiss it!"

The Edited Line Read: "Right on my sandwich, after you kiss it!"

Now obviously the word 'ass' isn't acceptable here. So, they replaced the word with 'sandwich'... SANDWICH. Bizarre right? What's even funnier is that there wasn't even a sandwich in that scene, idiots.

3. 'Beverly Hill Cops' (1984)

The Original Line Read: "This is bullshit, man.”

The Edited Line Read: “This is Bozo, man.”

First of all, who on Earth is Bozo? Second, how is Bozo even relevant to this scene? It's just another bizarre word put in to censor the inappropriate curse word.

4. 'The Mask' (1994)

The Original Line Read: "Margaret! You son of a bitch!"

The Edited Line Read: "Margaret! You son of a witch!"

By the looks of it they couldn't find a suitable word to replace the word "bitch." So they just chucked in the word "witch," which actually works here. Obviously this line is still made out to be an insult.

5. 'The Silence Of The Lambs' (1991)

The Original Line Read: "I can smell your cunt."

The Edited Line Read: "I can smell your scent."

Now if anything this just makes the scene really awkward. You don't just walk up to somebody and say "I can smell your scent," but neither do you say the other, either. If you did that on the street to a stranger today, you'll likely to receive a punch in return.

6. 'Shaun of the Dead' (2004)

The Original Line Read: “It's not hip hop, it's Electro. Prick... Next time I see him, he's dead.”

The Edited Line Read: “It's not hip hop, it's Electro. Prink... Next time I see him, he's dead.”

Don't get me wrong, this is one of my favorite films. But censoring the word "prick"? That changes the tone completely! The film is just made up of gore and cursing. So why censor the word "prick"? And if you're going to, what the hell is a 'prink'?!

7. 'American Pie' (1999)

The Original Line Read: “This one time, at band camp, I stuck a flute in my pussy.”

The Edited Line Read: “This one time, at band camp, I stuck a flute in my mouth.”

That really says it all. Take this one however you want.

8. 'Die Hard 2' (1990)

The Original Line Read: “Yippe-kai-yay, mother-fucker!”

The Edited Line Read: “Yippe-kai-yay, Mr. Falcon!”

This is an interesting one, actually. The word mother-fucker was taken out for obvious reasons. And the censorship boards actually went so far as to rename a character in the film as a slight attempt to give this line some real meaning.

9. 'Ghostbusters' (1984)

The Original Line Read: "We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!"

The Edited Line Read: "What a knockabout of pure fun that was."

As you can see here, the entire line was changed completely. The cast of Ghostbusters actually did another take of this scene using the edited line. The original line makes the scene more kick-ass (of course) and the edited line (IMO) makes it look like they've just come back from the park from playing a game of soccer!

10. 'Snakes On A Plane' (2006)

The Original Line Read: “I have had it with these mother-fucking snakes on this mother-fucking plane!”

The Edited Line Read: “I have had it with these monkey-fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane!”

This is my favorite one out of them all. It's just such a cheesy, terrible line! It's like a bad attempt at censoring something.

These were just a few, and as I'm sure you know there are so many more films out there that have fought censorship and failed.
