The Streaming Choice

Hulu vs Netflix

Cable is no longer relevant. Thanks, largely to younger viewers choosing instead to stream their shows. This allows them to choose what they want to watch, when they want to watch it, and they can even decide to pause their shows if they need to use the bathroom or go to the kitchen—they aren’t feeling rushed.

Every day, it seems like more and more options become available to stream shows and movies. Some of them standout from the rest. The choice for me comes down to a mix of original content and the variety of cable shows they have.

Netflix claims to have a wide variety of shows and moves to watch but the majority of their shows and movies are B-list or foreign stuff I don’t want to watch. I think it’s only there to make them look like they have more than they do. Netflix has a growing collection of their own films and shows, but for a few years was generally the stuff that wasn’t good enough to go to theaters—movies the studios felt wouldn’t make them any money, so they would dump it on Netflix. Recently, they have come out with a few hits like Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Making a Murder, and Stranger Things. The sci-fi cop movie starring Will Smith, Bright was better than I was expecting.

Most of their original content is hit or miss, and I find it to be mostly missed. The problem for me with Netflix is that they have been cancelling the Marvel shows and Disney is pulling all their content from Netflix for their own upcoming Disney streaming service. Stranger Things was one reason I kept Netflix. Season one of the show was fantastic. The previews for season two were enough to keep me paying and waiting to watch it. Then, when the season came out, I was disappointed. The quality fell off and the monster was boring. Netflix doesn’t have a lot of original content that I find appealing.

Hulu has original content and it has shows that are airing on cable. NBC’s hit shows Manifest and This is Us are available to watch the next day. On Netflix, if I wanted to watch a new show, I would have to wait months after the entire season had aired to watch a single episode. Hulu also gives you the option of adding networks like HBO and Starz to your subscription. Hulu’s original content is also hit or miss but they aim their shows more toward adults with stuff like The First, Castlerock, 11.22.63, The Path, and the Handmaids Tale. Plus their Marvel show, The Runaways—while it might be for teens, it is one of the better Marvel shows.

While I don’t enjoy Handmaids Tale, a lot of people do. I think of it the same as I do Orange is the New Black, shows I don’t enjoy but a good size group of people do. Castlerock on the other hand should be Hulu’s selling point for original content. The show takes place in Stephen King’s universe but is completely new. The show focuses on a prison where a man was found in a hidden cage with no record of who he is or where he came from.

Amazon Prime is for now the only other service in the race to be the best. They have a long way to go if they want to compete but with the announcement of a Lord of the Rings series to come, they could make up ground but it will really depend on how it looks when released. For now, their original content consists of Transparent, The Tick, and The Man in the High Castle. The only one to draw my interest is The Man in the High Castle.

When it comes to price comparison, Amazon Prime is roughly $13 per month. Hulu costs $8 and $12 if you don’t like 30 seconds of commercials during your show. Netflix costs between $8 to $14 depending on the video quality you want and the number of devices you want to use at a time.

In conclusion I think for your money and based on what they offer, Hulu is the best choice for anyone want to stream and ditch their cable package.
