Netflix ‘Klaus’ Movie Review

Netflix can really make a good Christmas movie

The movie, The Christmas Chronicles, by Netflix came out last year and was a great hit. This year the streaming service has come out with a cute Christmas origin story about how we write letters to Santa became a tradition.

With the cheesy Christmas romance movies Netflix is putting out (which we are all watching begrudgingly), they somehow have begun creating Christmas classics like The Christmas Chronicles and Klaus. I was wanting to wait for December to watch it, but I couldn’t help myself after watching the trailer almost a dozen times.

The story starts off at a postal service academy with the son of the owner slacking off and not participating in the training named Jesper. His father sends for him and ends up sending him to Smeerensburg a.k.a. the North Pole, essentially. To get out of Smeerensburg, Jesper must prove himself a postman by delivering 6,000 letters.

Once he gets there he is greeted by a town where there are two families that live there and they all hate each other and when a bell is rung (the battle bell) they leave their houses and fight each other. These two families have hated each other for centuries, and Jesper is finding it hard to get these people to send letters. He goes everywhere in the town to find letters and as a last resort he goes to the farthest home and that is where he meets Klaus.

Then begins the adventure of how Klaus and Jesper started the Christmas tradition of Santa coming down the Chimney and leaving presents under the tree.

I will leave my summary there as to not spoil it.

Before watching this movie, I was excited to see what was in store because the trailer was so cute and fun and the animation was different from the classic animated shows that we are used to seeing.

This movie is a family-friendly one that could end up being a classic because of how it brings together two unlikely people and the bond they start to create and the bond Jesper creates with the town and the children. We have an unlikely hero in Jesper as well because he doesn’t seem like the caring type, but after seeing how happy he is making people without them knowing it is him, he starts to become happy.

Take the time to sit down with your family and watch this fun tale unfold and how a unique take on this legend can make you think about it a bit differently than how you thought about it before.

A few messages to take from this movie (that I got at least) from the point of view of Jesper is that he had the life of luxury before coming to Smeerensburg and the opportunity to have it all back, but he chose this town that was literally coming down and he didn’t have it all, but in the end he ended up being really happy where he was. My take from that experience is wherever you are in your life, make the most of it because you can create happiness wherever you are as long as you make it so. You make your own happiness, things and other people don’t make it for you.

The second thing is almost the same as the first, but Jesper realizes that he is doing a kind of service for this town, but no one really knows what he is doing except delivering letters to Klaus and then the kids get toys. Doing service for others without recognition is one of the best feelings, but you don’t do it for that good feeling, you do it for the good feeling that the others get from you helping them.

Enjoy the 10/10 Christmas movie that Netflix came out with. Let’s hope they keep coming out with more to keep us Christmas people happy!
