Mega Man Is Indeed a Superhero!
And an awesome (yet underrated) one at that!
Superheros are, without a doubt, a massive part of popular culture. They dominate video games, the film industry, and comic books. DC and Marvel have certainly spawned the most popular Superheros. However, that should not suggest that heroes outside of these universes are not worth exploring.
One such hero is Mega Man. This is the main protagonist of the Mega Man franchise (which is made up of a plethora of video games, comics, and several television shows).
Mega Man is irrefutably an amazing superhero, and I will clarify why.
Mega Man started out humbly, as a robotic boy with an advanced artificial intelligence program, named Rock. He was initially designed to assist his creator, the brilliant roboticist, Dr. Light.
However, one of Dr. Light's colleagues—Dr. Albert W. Wily, had become jealous and embittered when his own projects were constantly overshadowed by that of Dr. Light's. Wily now viewed Light as a rival. Driven mad by this negativity and consumed with lunacy, Dr. Wily decided to reprogram Dr. Light's industrial robots and utilize them (with their immense strength and special abilities) to exact revenge and to conquer the world. Dr. Wily, in essence, had become a terrorist.
Rock, having a strong sense of justice, volunteered to be converted from his current state (as a mere lab assistant) into a super fighting robot—and thus became Mega Man! This is extraordinary, his enormous desire to want to help. Within his own perceptions, Rock was just a boy. But when the threat of Dr. Wily's robots loomed, he knew something must be done. The humans and other robots could not possibly stop the hazards that were endangering them. This robotic boy stepped up, despite the dangers of being destroyed and struck out to protect the world.
Seen below is Mega Man in his trademark blue coloration.
Now as Mega Man, he fought gallantly to stop Dr. Wily and his forces. This is what makes Mega Man a super hero. He possesses super abilities and skills that no normal human could ever have. With these, he voluntarily strives to stop evil forces and fight for peace (for both humans and robots). His immense moral convictions drive him to stop the threats that others simply cannot stop themselves, and protects a world that cannot protect itself. This is key, as without Mega Man, the other robots and humans would easily be defeated—left to suffer at the whims of a mad man.
Throughout the game series, Mega Man has reiterated his heroic intentions many times, and some of his quotes include: ''I'll keep on fighting for peace for both humans and robots!" ''I only fight when I am forced to protect the world from those who would pit machines against man." "I believe humans and robots can live in peace!" and "I'll protect the world!"
The following excerpt by legendary comic book writer, editor, publisher, and producer Stan Lee is extracted from "What is a Superhero?" and entitled, “More Than Normal, But Believable”...
"A superhero is a person who does heroic deeds and has the ability to do them in a way that a normal person couldn’t. So in order to be a superhero, you need a power that is more exceptional than any power a normal human being could possess, and you need to use that power to accomplish good deeds. Otherwise, a policeman or a fireman could be considered a superhero."
As such, Mega Man encompasses these attributes and traits—and therefore is indeed a great superhero.
Sadly, Mega Man rarely gets the credit his deserves for being such a great hero. However, its time to give praise and celebrate this robotic boy; who had originally been conceived as an assistant, but ultimately became the super-fighting robot and superhero Mega Man!
