Maurice Benard sets irate General Hospital fans straight
Sonny and Nina's love story has resulted in ugly responses from some viewers.
This article is regarding General Hospital characters and is not a reflection on the actors.
Maurice Benard speaks out again
It is heading into the second year since the Nixon Falls storyline began but many General Hospital viewers still will not accept that Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) are falling in love. The comments some fans make on social media are just plain nasty and once again Benard has felt the need to set the record straight.
The soap vet has said spoken on the issue on multiple occasions and asked fans to allow the storyline to progress. Maurice says that he is enjoying this new aspect of his character, doing something different, and is growing as an actor. Benard has pointed out that it is important to be stretched and not remain one-dimensional' He continues to emphasize that this is just a role and said fans should ride the wave. Instead, many viewers continue to say they hate Nina with Sonny as a couple and fast forward through their scenes.
Some have commented that the duo is disgusting and others have used the vomit emoji to respond to posts and others have said they are sickening. In poll after poll, General Hospital watchers overwhelmingly ( 75-90 %) expressed a dislike for this pairing. Now Benard's most recent response reveals he has a bit of his alter ego the mob boss in him.
Benard defends his character's choice
According to Soaps in Depth, a disgruntled fan went so far as to say that Sonny should have died in the Tan-O fire in Nixon Falls which is pretty extreme. Benard responded with: “Oh boy, you’d better take that back before my fans get upset!”. “Just because I’m not with the one you want doesn’t mean I’m not busting my butt trying to do the best work of my life.”
The soap spoiler reveals that Benard even addressed the fans who say there is no chemistry between Sonny and Nina by tweeting “Sometimes you only see what you wanna see,” “I understand that, but I just see what I see. I gotta tell you, there’s something there.”
Support for Sonny and Nina is growing
There are General Hospital viewers who are indifferent and neither love nor hates the couple. They are riding the wave as Benard mentioned and allowing the situation to play out as it will. There are also fans who are loving Nina with Sonny but many times when they speak out the haters attack them viciously. Some who watch GH admit they are jot fans of Nina but dislike Carly Corinthos ( Laura Wright) even more.
These individuals say they enjoy watching Carly squirm but now she is in the catbird seat. Carly knows that Nina is the biological mother of Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen). Willow's birth mom Harmony Miller begged Carly to not reveal the truth. If she honors Harmony's dying wish this will be the second time Carly keeps Nina from a daughter.
The first time was with Nelle Benson (Chloe Lanier). Carly's silence will be applauded by Nina haters but might bring sympathy from some of those who watch General Hospital who have yet to choose sides. Although the margin remains small there is a slight increase in the ranks of those who support Sonny and Nina. They will be hoping that when Carly's deception comes to light it will bring the mob boss and his new love even closer.
Be on the lookout for spoilers and updates related to Nina and Sonny to find out f their love will stand the test of soap opera time.
