Locke and Key is a Netflix series that follows a family, after the tragic loss of the father, they return to his childhood home and the children begin to discover magical keys and memories of the father’s past.

Before I go any further with the story from season one and my opinions on it, I want to give a spoiler warning. For anyone who hasn’t watched season one, it is available on Netflix and I would recommend checking that out before continuing to read this. Then come back and see if we had the same ideas on the show.

The characters to know are the Locke family. The father Rendell, having grown up in the Key house with his younger brother Duncan, Rendell was a school counselor who ended up murdered by one of the students. A lot of his character is explained in flashbacks and memories the kids discover using different keys. I have no complaints about his character, just wish it had explained more about his backstory in the house but I also understand they want to save stuff for the second season which I will cover in another story.

The mom, Nina Locke, is easily my least favorite character in the series. She forgets everything when a key is used around her until she starts drinking liquor. But when she stops drinking, she forgets again. The mom is paranoid from the previous attack that killed her husband and her only story in season one is her trying to find out the back story of Rendell and his friends going into the caves and a few of them dying after they finished high school.

The youngest of the three children, pictured above with Nina, is Bode Locke. He is the first to hear the keys whispering to be found and is the one who discovered the “echo” in the well on the property. He comes across as the most likeable in the family and is eager to learn as much about the keys as he can while also protecting them from his echo, the lady in the well later known as Dodge.

Next we have the two older children, Tyler and Kinsey. They’re both in the same high school and tend to hangout with the same friends. Season one mostly focuses on them and how they are generally resistant on using the keys, until Kinsey using the head key removes her own fear from her head. The head key that lets you go into your own head and add or remove things as well as explore your thoughts and memories. Tyler blames himself for the dads death as he had told the student if he ever kills his father to also kill Tyler’s at the same time.

The main villain for season one is Dodge. She is trying to collect the keys from the Lockes as she seems to know what they are for. It is not revealed in season one what her end goal is and the children believe they got rid of her/the demon entity. It is revealed that she came through the Omega door in the caves when Rendell had opened it with his high school friends and has been trying to get the Omega key back. It does not say if she wants to return to the other side of the door or is trying to let something else out.

Now I loved season one and every character with the exception of the mother Nina. I was hoping Uncle Duncan would have a bigger role, it’s revealed that Rendell removed Duncan’s memories when they were kids, which prevents Duncan from being helpful when the kids ask him questions. Right now of the keys they found my favorites have been the head key and the ghost door key. The keys that let you open any door you’ve seen and mirror keys are cool but there’s not a lot you can do with either when compared to how useful the head key and the ghost key. I can’t wait to binge season two which is available and will get the next part out as soon as possible. I’m hoping the second season has more answers about what was on the other side of the Omega door and why the mother keeps forgetting the magic when she is sober. Not to mention all the other keys I hope Bode discovers around the house.
