How Will 'Captain Marvel' Change The Course Of The MCU?

By the time we finally see 'Captain Marvel' there will be a total of 20 Marvel films that have been released that weren't female-led.

With the recent success of Wonder Woman, we're all gearing up for the next female-led superhero film in the MCU, but why has it taken the studio so long? It wasn't the right time, until now, according to Kevin Feige:

"I think it comes down to timing, which is what I’ve sort of always said, and it comes down to us being able to tell the right story."

Even though we've had many female superheroes grace our screens, including Black Widow, Gamora, and Scarlet Witch, fans have longed for a female superhero film. It's no secret that fans wanted to see a Black Widow solo movie, so it was surprising to find out that Marvel decided to go with Captain Marvel instead.

With two more years of waiting to go, we have to ask: Does this mean there will be more female-led superhero films after the release of Captain Marvel? We sure hope so! This means the MCU could be changed forever because we're not going to just get male-led films now. But let's look at some female superheroes who have potential to have a solo movie after Captain Marvel.

Which Female Superhero's Could Make It To The Big Screen?

She-Hulk

She-Hulk is Bruce Banner's cousin and possesses superhuman strength and speed. She became a superhero after a blood infusion from the Hulk. Unlike her cousin, she is in control of her powers even though she is always in her Hulk state.

Rachel Talalay, director of Tank Girl (1995), has expressed her interest in directing a She-Hulk film. In an interview with Vine, she said:

"I have such a strong vision of what She-Hulk should be. The difference between She-Hulk and Hulk is that she loved being She-Hulk. She was the Tank Girl of earlier days in terms of being able to say what she wanted, and when she became She-Hulk, it was like an opening of the door to freedom, to be the person that you wish you could be. That you’re stopped from being as a woman. And that’s the version of She-Hulk that I would love to embrace."

Tigra

She was first known as The Cat but later went by the name Tigra. She can heal faster than normal humans and can puncture any type of material (including steel) with her super sharp teeth and claws. She became a superhero as a result of the experiments that her old physics lecturer, Dr. Joanne Tumulo, was carrying out.

She stood by Iron Man during the Civil War. She fed him information from Captain America's Secret Avengers team in which she infiltrated, until she was later outed by Black Panther.

Marionette

Although she doesn't have any powers, she has some extreme abilities and is a highly skilled fighter. She is excellent at gymnastics which enables her to be a powerful warrior. Her motivation comes from the murder of her parents.

Her go-to weapon is a laser-sonic pistol. She meets Arcturus Rann who she forms an aliance with and they end up travelling together. Later on she falls in love with him. Both of them, with their friend Bug, continue to share adventures together.

Squirrel Girl

Also known as Doreen Green, Squirrel Girl looks like a human but possesses the tail of a squirrel. She is able to communicate with squirrels who often help her defeat villains. She has superhuman strength and agility. She fights crime in New York City and is considered to be Central Park's greatest protector. She has assisted many fellow superhero's including Iron Man and Hulk.

Anna Kendrick has expressed her interest in playing this character.

These are all strong female superheroes that have the ability to be popular characters on screen because of their determination to do the right thing and save the world. These are just a few of the female superheroes in the Marvel comics, there are others as well.

Will We Ever Get That Long Awaited Black Widow Solo Movie?

Honestly, I think it's too late. We're nearing the end of Phase 3 now so for them to make a Black Widow movie after 2019, what would be the point? It would have made more sense to make this movie in and around the time of her Avengers co-star's films but they're all coming to an end now. Unfortunately, I think Black Widow's time has past.

Other Existing MCU Female Characters

We might not get our Black Widow film but there are still other characters existing in the MCU that could be contenders for a solo movie. Sif from the Thor films would make an interesting film because we don't know a lot about her. She is loyal to Thor which makes fans like her and has appeared in Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D as well as the Thor films.

Scarlett Witch could also make an interesting solo movie and maybe we'd get to see Quicksilver again, if we went back in time. Gamora and Nebula are also established characters within the guardians universe so maybe they could have a movie either separately or together. I think them two starring in a film together could be very exciting.

However, as they already exist, the question is whether Marvel will give us their origin stories or give us a story that takes place after the Avengers films or in a different timeline completely. As we've had plenty of Marvel films that have focused on origin stories, maybe it's time to move on and make different stories, not just origin ones?

If they were to make a Gamora or Nebula film, it wouldn't need to be an origin story because we've been delivered background information on these characters in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 1 and 2. An entirely new story with these characters would be exciting to watch. However, it's up to Marvel and what they think the fans would want.

Final Thoughts

Wonder Woman was a huge success and showed that female-led superhero films can be successful. The possibilities are endless now when it comes to these films. With Brie Larson as Captain Marvel and Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden directing the film, there's no reason that this film won't be a hit, just like the other Marvel films.

Marvel know how to make successful movies so if they continue doing what they're doing, then future female-led films will be just as successful too. The release of Captain Marvel will be a turning point for the MCU and will inspire them to bring more female heroines to the silver screen. The MCU is changing for the better.

The future for female superhero films are brightening up!

Would you like to see more female superheroes have their own solo movies in the future?
