Sonny, Brick, and Carly

Sportscaster Stephen A Smith has randomly appeared on General Hospital since 2007 when he portrayed a reporter who was talking to Sonny's father Mike during the Metro Court hostage crisis. On March 31, 2016 he was cast as "Brick" and returned on April 1 of that year. Both appearances were related to Sonny asking him to put a bug in the office of Paul Hornsby to find out the connection with Carlos Rivera. The storyline implies that Sonny and Brick go way back and also that he has a crush on Carly. In initial episodes, he would ask about Mrs. Corinthos and whenever he saw her he would kiss her hand.

Stephen A Smith returned to General Hospital on August 18, 2016, February 23, 2017, and September 26 and October 8 of that year. His next appearance was in September of 2018. Since September 3 2020 Sonny's associate has been seen more frequently in Port Charles. Now that Sonny has been assumed deceased, Brick is assisting Jason in keeping tabs on Cyrus Renault. Viewers don't know many details about this man, not even his real name or if he has a family. He is showing himself to be an asset as well as a worthy opponent to enemies of the Corinthos family.

Stephen A Smith says he has watched General Hospital for 45 years since he was 8 years old. He said that all 3 television sets in his home would be turned to the ABC daytime drama. His mom and sisters would watch in different rooms and he joined in with them. During an interview with Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson, he shares how the same way his character is smitten with Carly's he is actually fond of her portrayer. Smith said that he "Loves me some Laura Wright" and that in his eyes she is the perfect Carly for Sonny. He adds that he hated it each time the writers paired her with Jax.

Brick was back on September 14 when Cyrus implied that he had the "Novaks" eliminated as a way to gain points with Jason. Brick holds his own with the drug kingpin, does not back down, nor mince his words. Some General Hospital fans are saying they would love for Stephen A Smith to have a larger role on the show and be seen more frequently. Right now, with Sonny out of the picture, he may be needed in order to keep Cyrus in check. When he is operating as a sports announcer, Stephen A Smith can be talkative and humorous. As Brick, however, he comes across cold and calculating.

Perhaps at some point, General Hospital will give viewers the back story on how Brick and Sonny met. At this point, no one knows where he comes from, what he does for a living, or if he is married with children. It would be interesting if he turns out to be related to nurse Phyllis and her husband who are caring for Sonny who has amnesia. Brick was instrumental in obtaining the false documents that indicated that Dev was Brando's son and Sonny's cousin. If Cyrus dies, Renault's lawyer has been instructed to give an envelope with this information to the police. Brick would be implicated and prosecuted for his crimes. He definitely will want Cyrus kept in check but not dead.

Nelle Benson had a similar letter that got into the hands of Ryan Chamberlain and later Cyrus Renault. Julain Jerome spent countless hours trying to recover that envelope. Perhaps between Jason and Brick, they can find a way to retrieve the evidence as well as take Cyrus out. Some fans are hoping that Brick will stick around even when Sonny returns, He does not say much but those eyes can give looks of steel just like Jason who is known as Stone Cold. Be on the lookout for Stephen A Smith to make more appearances on General Hospital and perhaps stick around longer than a cameo. Brick and Jason seem to work well together so let’s see what the future holds.
