Online haters strike again

Diamond White portrays Paris Buckingham on the CBS soap The Bold and the Beautiful. Her character has come under fire for taking screen time from longtime vets of the series and also for dating Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor) . Now the actress herself is addressing fans who have badmouthed her online because they don’t like her looks. White is not alone in this as three General Hospital cast members have been the victims of online hate and each has addressed the issue several times.

Both Kelly Monaco (Sam McCall) and Kelly Thiebaud ( Britt Westbourne) have used social media to set haters strate but the disrespect keeps on coming. Both women have had their hairstyles as well as their characters critiqued. Monaco was criticized for sharing a photo where she was not wearing makeup and her hair was not styled. She says she was in bed and not feeling well and could not understand the level of hate that came her way. Many fans defended the actress saying that she was beautiful in her natural state.

General Hospital actresses stand up to online bullies

Angry fans attacked Thiebaud because she decided to wear bangs during COVID when soap actors were doing their own hair and makeup. Both women have emphasized that they are actresses trying to make a living and said online bullying needs to stop. Weak minded people hide behind a phone or computer screen to say the most brutal things that they would not like anyone saying to them. Our current culture thinks nothing of being mean spirited. Just like Monaco and Thiebaud the B&B actress used Instagram to let online bullies know she is not afraid of them.

Even so it’s got to be discouraging wen all you are trying to do is make a living and ugly things are being posted about you on a regular basis. This is more about the immaturity of the haters but its frustrating to see this behavior in adults who should know better but behave so juvenile.

Kirsten Storms has weathered the storms

Kirsten Storms has been attacked online more than any other soap actress. She has been judged for being too thin, for gaining weight and falsely accused of being anorexic and having cancer. She was made fun of for acne on her face which she revealed was stress related and has gotten out in front of several recent health issues in an attempt to stop fake news. Not long ago she even addressed the bullying with Soaps in Depth:

The soap vet says she does not care what people say about her even though rude comments do hurt. She admonished the bullies to not put her daughter in the middle of their nitpicking or she would come for them. Storms says she tries to turn the other cheek and not let it get to her but the truth is she should not have to.

Diamond White defends herself

Diamond says she as been criticized because her weight fluctuates and for frequently changing her hairstyle. She pointed out that her weight has dropped because she is more active now but does not specifically address the hair issue. As White is an African American female with coily hair it is only natural that she would not be wearing the same style each day. Depending on the weather her tresses might be straight, kinky or curly.

White is to be commended for working with what nature gave her. Younger black women today can choose from natural, permed or curly styles as well as utilize wigs, weave and hair pieces. This is most often out of necessity and not as a fashion statement. Women of other cultures whose hair falls straight don’t deal with the same issues and do not need the wide array of choices.

Straight hair (AKA white hair) does not curl/kink/ nap up when a woman sweats or water hits it and require that it be styled all over again. Straight hair simply dries out and returns to its original state. Many fans of The Bold and the Beautiful enjoy that White often sports diffetent hair colors and styles and see this as the personal choice of the actress.

Some of White’s cast mates from The Bold and the Beautiful have weighed in by telling her she owes no one an explaination or telling her she is attractive. Diamond has a small frame but is too heavy and does not look like the typical soap actress. The fact that she is not a cookie cutter should be celebrated and not violated. Diamond is not the only African American daytime star who has been criticized because of her hair style.

Sydney Makayla and Tabyana Ali

Indifference to African American hair styles is a problem

White is not the only black daytime star whose hairstyles have been critiqued. Sydney Makayla and Tabyana Ali are the former and current actress to portray Trina Robinson on General Hospital. Both women have had fans make cruel remarks online about their braided hair that some viewers mistook for dreadlocks.

It’s not clear why ethnic hairstyles offend so many but this raises the bigger issue. Diamond White. and the other actresses mentioned are not the problem as they have the right to dress and style their hair or not as they choose. They are human and should be allowed to gain or lose weight or deal with health issues. The narrow minded soap fans who bully online are the ones who need to change.
