The soap veteran has had an impressive career with memorable roles for 50 years.

A Martinez has made a name for himself in entertainment

The name Adolfo Larrue Martínez III might not sound familiar but you probably know the actor by his stage name of A Martinez and his numerous roles in film and on television. He was born on September 27, 1948, in Glendale, California, and his heritage is Native American, Mexican, and Spanish. This has allowed him to play a variety of characters with different ethnic backgrounds.

“A” is observing 5 decades in the entertainment industry and specifically celebrating one film role that was 50 years ago this year.. The actor is wide[y known because he has portrayed characters in five daytime soap operas. He was on Santa Barbara, from 1988 until 1992 as Cruiz Castillo, on General Hospital as Roy DiLucca from 1999-2002, One Life to Live, as Ray Montez in 2008, on The Bold and the Beautiful, as Dr. Ramon Montgomery in 2011, and again in 2012, and Days of Our Lives, as Eduardo "Eddie" Hernandez from 2015 until 2017.

Although he was never on The Young and the Restlrss he did costar with Y&R actress Eileen Davidson (Ashley Abbott) in the romantic film Symphoria. Martinez won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in A Drama Series in 1990 for his Santa Barba character.

The "A" has meaning

The Martinez family began calling "A", "Little A" and"Little Adolfo", at a young age to distinguish him from his father and grandfather. Over time, "A" became his chosen monicker. The actor began his professional career when he was twelve years by winning a talent competition title by singing at the Hollywood Bowl.

Martinez graduated from Verdugo Hills High School in Tujunga, Los Angeles, CA where he ran track and was part of a rock band. He studied acting at UCLA and was briefly married to actress Mare Winningham for one year in 1981. He married Leslie Bryans, in 1982 and they are still together. They have one son, Dakota Lee, and two daughters, Devon Makena and Ren Farren.

Martinez additional roles

The actor also appeared on the primetime dramas Barney Miller, L.A. Law, Falcon Crest, Profiler, Cannon, Longmire, and Born to the Wind.In 1970 he portrayed Luis, the stable hand who helps Little Joe Michael Landon) on Bonanza in the episode "Gideon the Good".

Matinez was in many feature films including The Cowboys (1972), Once Upon a Scoundre, (1974), Powwow Highway and She Devil (1989), The Cherokee Kid (1996), and Curse of Chucky (2013). In 2018 he began portraying Mayo in the television series Queen of the South.

Fifty years since The Cowboys

According to Soap Hub, the actor recently spoke about the 50th anniversary of The Cowboys where he co-starred with John Wayne. The plot revolves around Waynes’s character an aging rancher who is forced to hire a group of schoolboys after his own men desert him prior to a 400-mile cattle drive. The Cowboys is currently streaming on Roku and you can rent it on Amazon Prime videos.

Martinez shared that co-star Robert Carradine was only 17 at the time and was required to have a guardian on location. Martinez says he was recruited for the position because he was 22 at the time.

Regarding Carradine, the actor said “We were thick as thieves, and Bobby and I got together last week to talk with [Rob Word] about the upcoming reunion he’s planning." He added that it was an honor and a thrill to be a part of the epic film which is based on the novel by William Dale Jennings.
