"Symbols of Resistance in a Changing World"

he salute that disturbed the oppressive powers.

In a striking display of defiance against oppressive powers, medical workers in Myanmar have adopted a unique salute in their protests. This symbolic gesture involves keeping three fingers open while the thumb and little finger are tightly closed. Interestingly, this salute is not confined to Myanmar alone, as it has been witnessed in previous protests across various Asian nations.

In 2014, the same salute emerged during protests following a military coup in Thailand. Since then, this symbolic gesture has made appearances in places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other Asian countries, with its latest manifestation being in Myanmar. It's worth noting that this salute originates from a fictional world, making its transition to the real world all the more intriguing. This symbol was prominently featured in the novels and films of "The Hunger Games."

In the fictional universe of "The Hunger Games," an alternate America is depicted under the rule of a dictatorial government known as Panem. This government, led by a president residing in luxury, has divided the nation into impoverished districts, tightly controlled by ruthless and brutal police forces. The annual Hunger Games serves as a cruel reminder of the price of rebellion, wherein one participant from each district is chosen by lottery to compete until only one remains alive, with the entire event broadcast on live television.

Katniss Everdeen, an athlete, ignites the spark of rebellion by using the same salute we now see in Myanmar. While there has been no significant reaction to this gesture in Myanmar, the Thai administration banned it in 2014. Such instances of popular cultural symbols crossing over into reality are not new.

For instance, the Guy Fawkes mask, inspired by Alan Moore's "V for Vendetta" and later adapted into a film, became a symbol used by the activist group Anonymous. This mask also made appearances in movements such as "Occupy Wall Street," the Arab Spring, protests in Thailand, Turkey, and Brazil, and even in protests against lockdowns and vaccines. Like Katniss Everdeen, the true identity of "V" remained a mystery, becoming an anonymous symbol of resistance against the powerful.

In the real world, these symbols serve a crucial purpose by concealing the wearer's identity, especially in countries where governments employ facial recognition technology to suppress dissent. This led to the banning of these masks in Saudi Arabia and later in Bahrain, branding them as symbols of revenge and rebellion.

Non-realistic narratives effectively use such symbols, as evidenced in Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale." The story portrays an authoritarian America where women are reduced to sex slaves with the sole purpose of bearing children for the upper class. The iconic red clothing and white headscarves of the handmaids were adopted by feminist activists in the Western world.

Symbols like the Hunger Games salute and the Guy Fawkes mask are potent political symbols, while the handmaids' attire represents cruelty. But why did the Joker character gain such popularity? This DC Comics villain's character and distinctive makeup have made appearances in protests in various countries.

The Joker, perhaps, resonates as a symbol of human beings in a cruel and fractured society. This inversion of roles was notably observed in Beirut, where citizens likened their city to Gotham City, adopting the Joker as a symbol in the ongoing battle between the elite and the underprivileged.

These symbols transcend language and regional boundaries, connecting protesters worldwide through the medium of popular culture. They also serve as a warning to oppressive governments and unruly elites. In the words of Alan Moore, "Our rulers have not heard our voice for a long time, and now that voice has become louder." This amplification of voices is especially potent when symbols are involved.

It is a shame what happens to people's freedom. The world is suffering and dictators waste precious time on wars against each other. We pray for peace and guidance. Ver informative article Naveed.
