Black Bars are formed by a rolling procedure wherein steel is passed through numerous rolls while heating billets, blooms, and other raw materials. The heating process takes place at a temperature around 1200 degrees Celsius. This temperature needs to exceed the recrystallization temperature of steel.

When steel is heated to this temperature, it can be easily formed into desired shapes and sizes. Black bars are formed without any delay in the process and hence do not involve reheating to obtain accuracy. The black bars tend to shrink after cooling.

Thus, black Bars tend to be cheaper than bright bars. The fine control of tolerances that can be accomplished in brilliant bars cannot be achieved in black steel bars due to the nature of the process and the temperatures involved.

As a result, they are further treated to produce steel brilliant bars for procedures requiring higher precision. As a result, black steel bars are less costly than shining steel bars.

Black bars are used in applications that do not demand precise accuracy and tolerance such as rails, railroad tracks, I-beams, etc.

What sets Bright Bars apart from Black Bars?

A bright bar is an advanced and processed high-quality version of Black Bars. They are produced using a cold drawing or cold rolling process. The bars are processed in cold reduction mills where they are reduced to room temperature and then further enhanced via procedures such as annealing, grinding, turning, polishing, temper rolling, etc.

Bright bars also referred to as brilliant are bars with excellent precision. These bars have great precision control following the shape and size of the bar with no damage caused to its properties. Cold drawn bars such as bright bars have a great surface finish with a high degree of concentricity, straightness, and susceptibility. When compared to black bars, bright bars are expensive as they have more processing and are harder to work with.

Keeping strength, quality, brilliant finishing, high tolerance, and visually pleasing appearance in mind, bright bars are the ideal choice and have a significant lead over Black bars. They're employed in situations where precise tolerances are essential, such as in CNC machines.
