The snowfall melted into our skin with a golden shimmer. I threw a worried glance at the horde behind me. Everyone stared at their skin, captivated by the color. They flashed greedy grins and frenzied eyes as they rubbed the snowflakes between their fingers. They didn't notice that it was eating their flesh away, little by little.

Stayin' Alive
Jacoby sucked in a breath between clenched teeth. He felt surreal; weightless and dizzy, yet stuck to the floor like his feet had grown roots that anchored him to hell. He stared over Belona’s shoulder at the screen in horrible fascination, completely thunderstruck. He didn’t know if he would throw up or giggle like a person gone mad, but either was likely, and probably both at the same time when his heart dropped back into place.

By now he was reasonably confident that he understood it, which is why the feeling came as a surprise.

It was night, soon to be dawn. Late summer, humid and still. Addison stood on the deck of a beach house facing the sea. Thin cloud diffused light from a low full moon casting his face and nearly all around him in silver. His eyes were closed, his hands gripped the railing at the edge of the deck and he listened to the sound of the ocean rolling against the shore.

A million stars spiralled into a molten core. It was blinding, yet beautiful. Like an intricate spider-web, all light gathered into an atomised embrace; a singularity. He’d seen it more times than he dared to imagine; drifting down the zipwire of light into the centre and watched the same technicolour explosion a thousand times over. Here, he was God. This was his realm. This was his life’s work.
